I've been thinking a lot about the RoA lately since Disneyland announced they're going to alter it forever next year for Star Wars. Naturally my comparison-loving brain led me to start thinking about whether I liked MK's or DL's better, so I wanted to get everyone's take on which version you prefer.

On one hand you have Disneyland's, which strikes me personally as more "fantasy based", with its New Orleans Square surroundings and Pirates Lair instead of Tom Sawyer Island. It has an aura of aliveness and charm, largely contributed by all the boats, canoes, and rafts that float by throughout the day. How it curves in a wide circle from Frontierland to Critter Country is very majestic, while still remaining quaint with the rest of the park. A trip to Disneyland is never complete for me until I've stood by the water, soaking it all in and taking an unhealthy amount of photos of the ships passing by.

On the other hand you have Magic Kingdom's, the overall tone of which conveys to me a more rustic and lived-in atmosphere. From the water mill in the middle of the river to the riverside boardwalk that runs from Liberty Square to Frontierland, it has an almost peaceful vibe. It also gives off an overall "grounded in reality" feel, supplemented in large part by the historical progression from the colonial era to the old west surrounding it. By far my favorite thing to do in any Disney Park is slowly stroll along the Rivers of America boardwalk after the park closes, taking in all the tranquility and watching the lights reflect off the water.

It's an incredibly close call for me, but if I had to pick one, I'd probably go with Magic Kingdom's RoA. Then again ask me tomorrow and I could tell you I like Disneyland's better, haha! (I may or may not have left in the "change your vote" option for the fickle-minded person I am.:))

They're a very close call for me. Surprisingly different from each other, yet both very special and magical. Indeed, they're each my favorite area of their respective parks. If I had to choose, I'd say DL, because of the kinetic energy of all the boats, and the way you can stand on the Frontierland shore and see BTMRR in one direction, HM and splash along the river in the other direction, etc. (On the other hand, the MK's boardwalk at night is truly magical.)

I'm really worried that the rumored Frontierland "expansion" at MK will use the same strategy of shortening the river that's being used for Star Wars at DL. It would help with the Splash/BTMRR area bottleneck to have paths between there and HM area, but I'd hate to see it ruin the beautiful views from along the river in the current Frontierland...
I could be completely wrong on this, but I thought I remembered someone credible say in the Frontierland Expansion thread that the new attraction would possibly go somewhere behind Big Thunder and Splash. That's what I'm hoping will happen, because I love the current setup over there.

MK steals it for me. New Orleans Square is among my favorite Disney lands I've been to, but their Rivers of America feels too hectic for me. There's too many ships, and, while Fantasmic is amazing, you can't appreciate the river at night since everyone is crowding around it. I just couldn't take it all in like at MK since that area always seemed to be full of rushing people. At MK, it just feels "there". There is a better sense of place to it for me. Frontierland is just so tranquil thanks to it. It compliments all the surrounding attractions extremely well, and it just fits the land so well. Rivers of America and Frontierland just feels so peaceful (especially at night) compared to the rest of the park. DL also has some beautiful areas with the River like by Haunted Mansion and Splash Mountain, but I just prefer MK's.

"Look at that! Now THAT is a busy river!" - Walt at Disneyland's RoA.

I always think of that Walt Disney quote when I see Disneyland's Rivers. It really makes that area of the park come alive with kinetic energy. Mark Twain, The Columbia, the canoes and Tom Sawyer rafts. Love it all. All that's missing is the Keel boats and it would be perfect. I will miss it next year.

Magic Kingdoms is very nice too. Would be perfect if the Keel boats and canoes were still operational.

MK's is more convincing but lacks purpose. I think you have to give the edge to DL, simply for being so much more... functional. Shame about what they did to their Tom Sawyer Island though. And RoA is a good example of DL's themes bleeding into each other in ways they shouldn't.

I'm like others here in the I have a really hard time deciding between the two. I've always loved the Mark Twain and the Columbia, and seeing the canoes shooting around there helps with the vibe of a busy river (sure miss the keelboats!). But the vote for me is biased by a trip on the MK's RoA on the Liberty Belle at night a few years ago. Once past Big Thunder and Splash, it really felt like we were out in the wilderness somewhere. That suspension of disbelief was made much easier by the length of the ride.

So it's a close vote, but the MK barely edges DL, at least for me.

Disneyland, without hesitation.

You can call WDW's "rustic" or "peaceful" and I'll grant that. It is both of those things. But there's another word I would choose to describe it: dead. Nothing happens there.

At one point in time MK had two riverboats, two keelboats, canoes and rafts on the river. Now it's just one boat and rafts.

The last time I rode the riverboat around and went to Tom Sawyer's Island, I just found it kind of depressing. I like the "boring" old stuff more than anything else at Disney, but these attractions felt neglected. Like, it was a wonder they even bothered to open the island.

Not saying that Tom Sawyer's Island at DL is in better shape, but at least they have Fantasmic on that one.

That's funny, because when I went over to Disneyland's TSI I left within 2 minutes because it felt too "kid-ified" with the Pirates overlay. Not enough in terms of walking around and enjoying the scenery, whereas Magic Kingdom's feels more organic, with all the forts, caves and spots to sit (including one of my favorite areas in the park):
