Miramax Reaches Agreement With Jonathan Burnham on Three Year Contract Extension

July 24, 2002

NEW YORK (PRNewswire) -- Miramax Films has reached an agreement on a new three year contract extension with Jonathan Burnham, president and Editor-in-Chief of Miramax Books, to continue as head of the company's highly successful two-year-old book imprint, it was announced today by Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. The company's book division, formerly known as Talk Miramax Books, will now be known as Miramax Books.

"Jonathan has done a remarkable job building Miramax Books into a profitable venture so quickly," said Weinstein. "Our new agreement with Jonathan highlights our complete commitment and confidence in his ability to continue bringing great authors and a diverse range of projects to Miramax Books."

"I am thrilled to be steering Miramax Books into the future. I plan to build on our early successes to create a truly enduring book imprint: an energetic, independent book list that is here to stay."

In 2001 alone, Miramax produced five New York Times bestsellers (ICE BOUND, STOLEN LIVES, SURRENDERING TO MARRIAGE, ARTEMIS FOWL, DENSITY OF SOULS), out of 16 books, an exceptionally high success ratio. In addition, STOLEN LIVES, which Burnham brought to the company from French publisher Grasset, sold nearly 600,000 copies in hardback.

Upcoming projects include books this fall by Rudy Giuliani and Queen Noor, with Quentin Tarantino's first novel KILL BILL, Madeleine Albright's memoirs, and Sandra Lee's cookbook, SEMI-HOMEMADE, set for publication next spring.

The company's children's list is incredibly impressive, led by ARTEMIS FOWL. The first book enjoyed 18 weeks on the NYTimes bestseller list, the second volume is selling even more strongly, with two more highly-anticipated sequels and a Miramax film adaptation (starting production in October 2002) on the way. Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Chabon's first novel for young readers, SUMMERLAND, will also be released this Fall (October) with a 250,000 first printing. The story will be adapted into a film by Miramax, using CGI technology and the company has also reached an agreement with Chabon to publish his next two children's novels in 2003 and 2004.

Miramax's non-fiction list includes Sylvia Hewlett's much discussed CREATING A LIFE; Latifa's MY HIDDEN FACE and Lily Burana's STRIP CITY. The company's fiction highlights include Helen De Witt's highly praised first novel, THE LAST SAMURAI, and Kathy de Marco's CRANBERRY QUEEN.

In addition, Miramax Books has helped make Christopher Rice into a best-selling novelist at the age of 22, with his latest book THE SNOW GARDEN, a NY Times bestseller this year. The company has also reached an agreement for Rice's latest novel, WALKING FIRE.
