Miramax Launching Cannon Pic
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) --- After his star turn in "Drumline," Nick Cannon is moving forward with his newfound feature film career. The actor will star in and executive produce "The Underclassman," a feature film project that Miramax Films has picked up in a pre-emptive bid as a pitch that will see Cannon receive what sources say is a guaranteed $1.5 million. That number can climb to $2.5 million based on the domestic boxoffice bonuses of "Drumline" and the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures/Alcon Entertainment feature "If You Were My Girl." "National Lampoon's Van Wilder" scribes David Wagner and Brent Goldberg are writing the script for "Underclassman," with "Wilder" producers Peter Abrams, Robert Levy and Andrew Panay producing through their Miramax-based Tapestry Films. "Underclassman" is described as "Beverly Hills Cop" meets "Never Been Kissed" and is based on the 22-year-old Cannon's idea. Because the actor looks younger than his age, he crafted an idea that sees him star as a 24-year-old detective who, with his schoolboy looks, doesn't get any respect among his peers, who constantly send him on petty assignments. When he is sent to go undercover at an elite private school, he stumbles upon an international stolen-car ring involving some of the students. Miramax co-president of production Bob Osher and executives Christian McLaughlin and Laura Rister brought the project into Miramax and will oversee it for the company.
