What ever happened with this, I heard it actually is going to end soon and we may see the Disney-Pixar studios coming soon...I think it was from Inside the Magic, or some other podcast...

Several websites are now reporting that MGM will become Disney-Pixar Studios. My guess is that it will happen in 2008 and will coincide with the opening of Toy Story Mania.

I'm NOT surprised ONE bit. I noticed during the NEW Disney FREE Planning DVD, the 'word' MGM was dropped. The DVD has "Disney Studios" in the corner not 'Disneys MGM Studios'. And with the whole back lot movie changing too - I kind of saw this slowly happening. To my understanding many of the MGM classic were/will be removed (I haven't seen this personally), but I've read talks about it. Many are being replaced with Disney movies, classics, and soon to be classics.

They could always keep the ride and change the Wizard of Oz to Toy Story.
Arg. I hope not. Can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not...

Anyway, I know this whole Disney-Pixar Studios thing is just a rumor at this point, but I for one certainly hope it doesn't happen. Disney-MGM was created as a tribute to the golden age of cinema, or as Eisner put it, "the Hollywood that never was, and always will be." It certainly included Disney films, but they weren't the focus--after all, there was already a whole other park that was mostly dedicated to them. The Studios had their own feel, and like that of Epcot, it's slipping away.

Just in general Disney seems to be favoring the "what's big now" over "what's an established classic." Consider that between the closing of the Mickey Mouse Revue and the opening of Philharmagic in the same space, there was no attraction featuring Mickey Mouse at WDW (okay--he had cameos here and there). And Pooh only appeared recently. Now consider that there are currently three attractions based on "Finding Nemo" and when Toy Story Mania opens there will be two "Toy Story" based attractions as well. I like the Pixar films, but the way all the parks are starting to focus on them seems short sighted to me.

They have called it the Disney Studios on the videos for many years now. Don't use that as proof that MGM will be dropped. Not saying it won't but that isn't proof in this case.

With the Block Party coming to MGM in 2008, I think a re-branding to Disney/Pixar Studios is in the works.... Isn't the Block Party all Pixar characters?

Unless I have missed the memo, BPB hasn't been confirmed to be heading to MGM, just rumor at this point.

its just called 'the disney studios' in disney land paris park

Thats because of the same reason that it is called "The Disney Studios" on the planning DVDs:

The contract only lets them use the name in the US.

As far as it ending, it won't. It will keep being renewed to allow the use of the movies in the attractions they are already in. Its free publicity for MGM at this point, regardless of who owns the name now. This isn't to say the park won't be renamed. But the contract will keep getting renewed.

Listen to this week's Inside the Magic... Ricky states that work is set to begin on the barn's that house the floats for the parade, so they can accommidate the floats for the Block Party... He further went on to say that Stars and Cars will end around march 13, 2008 and Block Party will start March 18... give or take a few days... Stars and Motor Cars is scheduled to go to Paris I think he said... He didn't classify this as a rumor... He classified this as something that will be happening....

The source is still an unofficial podcast, so while that's a strong indication (assuming he's right) it's not official confirmation.

I would rather see Disney/Pixar studios. I'd also like to see it expanded...MGM's always a half day for me, at best. Sometimes I don't even bother taking the time to see it.

I think most people forget, that one of the primary reasons Walt even wanted to build a theme park in the first place was because it would be good advertising for his movies. That's why it will always be constantly updated with the new and improved vice the older classics.

Thats because MGM didn't really exist for a while. In fact, the MGM that is in the studios isn't the MGM that exists today and is involved in films like Casino Royale, Rocky Balboa, Clerks 2, Lucky Number Slevin.

The older (pre-86) films are owned by Turner Entertainment, which are the movies in question with the studios. The MGM library is HUGE. You know all those movies with the roaring lion at the beginning of the opening credits? Yeah, thats MGM.

Believe it or not, just because you don't recognize something doesn't mean no one else does. The films that MGM presents in the studios are classics, and sell well on DVD year after year.

Really the only place I can think of seeing MGM properties is on the Great Movie Ride (Singin' in the Rain, Tarzan, Wizard of Oz) but at the same time WB is in there (Casablanca), Paramount & Lucasfilms (Indiana Jones), and Fox (Alien), not to mention all the things in the finale (20th Century Fox, Buena Vista, Columbia, MGM, New Line Cinema, Orion, Paramount, Touchstone, United Artists, Universal, Walt Disney Pictures, WB).

Around the rest of the park we have Fantasmic, Beauty and the Beast, High School Pep Rally, Honey, Journey into Narnia, I Shrunk the Kids, Magic of Disney Animation, Muppet Vision 3-D, Playhouse Disney, Voyage of the Little Mermaid and One Man's Dream all using Disney owned property.

Backlot tour uses mostly if not all Disney properties.

Star Tours and Indiana Jones use Lucasfilm.

WB or CBS (Movie or TV Show) for Twilight Zone.

Rock n Rollercoaster and Lights Motors Action have no affiliation with any movies. (Yes I know LMA has trivia and herbie, but anyone can do trivia on anything and herbie is Disney anyway)
