Membership Questions

We are strongly considering becoming DVC members. We have young kids and live just about an hour from WDW, and therefore make several short day trips each year. We have stayed overnight on the property at various resorts with our annual pass discount, but usually only for a couple of nights.

However, we were more interested in staying at HH and VB. We like the idea of having a beach vacation with the “Disney experience”. Currently, I am considering making VB our home resort (if possible). I am also really interested in what the point system is for non-DVC properties and the Disney cruise line. Does anyone have any info on this or any comments on other things I should be considering? Also, what are the disadvantages of buying resale vs. buying directly from Disney?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello, We really like VB. We've stayed there every May for the past 3 years. It's a nice get-away from the WDW pace. Usually buying resale is cheaper, but that may not be the case for HH or VB. I remember seeing something about Disney offering those resorts for significantly less than the $101 per point for the WDW resorts. It's worth investigating.
The point structure for the non-DVC resorts is a bit higher (even the moderates have a higher point per night than the DVC resorts). You can do it but it's not as "economical." Same is true for the cruise. I think when DVC first started offering cruises it was a better deal but the point costs for cruises have really gone up and so paying cash is the better way to go.

We bought through Disney, so I don't know much about resales. If you can't get points at Vero through DVC, you could buy resale, but wouldn't they deed back in 2042?

If you buy your points at SSR, they'd be good for 45 years. You may want to crunch some numbers to see how much you'd save buying resale vs. the extra 8 years of ownership. Your little ones will thank you when they're adults.
