Maximizing Space Usage - Increasing Capacity

Walt once said, "Here in Florida, we have something special we never enjoyed at Disneyland...the blessing of size. There's enough land here to hold all the ideas and plans we can possibly imagine."

That said, even in the enormity of the Walt Disney World resort, we do run into cases where capacity needs to be increased and space goes wasted.

I challenge everyone to find ways to maximize space and increase capacity at the 4 parks, 2 water parks, and main shopping district that WDW has to offer. Here's where it gets tricky. Imagineers love the idea of blue sky and plenty of space to work with, but you won't always have that.

Without creating new lands or using expansion pads, how would you maximize the current space used at WDW? Remember, capacity doesn't just count in ride capacity, but also in restaurants, parade/spectacular viewing, and even down to stroller parking. You are more than welcome to replace existing attractions, shows, restaurants, shops and facilities, but your goal is to increase capacity in areas not re-purpose it. As a final challenge, backstage infrastructure, restrooms, and delivery access should be taken into consideration and should never completely disappear, but be relocated somewhere.

So, do you have what it takes? What area would you tackle first? Here are just a few ideas to get those juices flowing:

-Reimagineering Adventureland- Crowded pathways, limited stroller parking, popular attractions among tired attractions, a seasonal restaurant, and unused spaces. How would you reimagineer Adventureland to increase capacity and solve these issues?

-A Future World of Possibilities- Future World is home to some of the most wasted space in Epcot from Wonders of Life, The Oddessy building, Journey into Imagination, and Innoventions. Taking into account the yearly festivals and the need for flex space for them, how would you still increase capacity in Future World without building a new pavilion to destroying Epcot's green spaces. Does it come down to bringing in new attractions or does it go much more beyond that?

-Putting Excitement Back into Show Business- While Studios may be on the verge of a major overhaul and expansion, what if you were only assigned to reused and increase capacity on what already existed? Studios crowd patterns shift heavily to Sunset Blvd during the evening, how would you maximize the rest of the park and even out crowds? Shows shows and more shows, but how would you even out the roster of attractions and shows without major expansion.

Let's see what you got.

Sounds pretty fun and cool! You came a little late though, could have been a nice weekend challenge!;) Maybe if I have time I'll post something here a little later on in the week.

Here are my ideas for my own challenge.
MAGIC KINGDOM
Main Street USA
-Expand the entry tunnels under the train station to help reduce such a bottleneck. An extra 3 feet can make all the difference.
-Add designated indoor arcade (walkway not video games) to the West side of the Emporium serving as parade bypass and rain shelter. Additional gift shop floor room will also increase capacity of merchandise and people.
-Add more permanent always open side street to East side of Main Street designed to me more of a residential facade of turn of the century America with back access to some stores and an outdoor patio for Starbucks.
-Expanded Hub and Seating for Ice Cream & Casey's Corner has already been taken care of.
-Designated stroller parking created to right of Crystal Palace entrance.

Adventureland
-Expand the entry bridge.
-Reopen the Adventureland Veranda with new name, remodeling, serving Asian/Indian/Polynesian food.
-Remove Aloha Isle to make room for Veranda remodel/reopening. Dole Whips moved to Sunshine Tree Terrace.
-Adventureland Breezeway is expanded (taking over some previous merchandise space.
-New foot bridge and path from previous smoking section near Aloha Isle around other side of Swiss Treehouse created to connect with Jungle Cruise area. (Treehouse will be more like Disneyland's)
-Moana meet & greet added along new footpath.
-More designated stroller parking added along Jungle Cruise path at base of Treehouse.
-Compact Pirates queue under cover and use extra free space with unused courtyard as new Pirates stroller parking. (No more strollers along walkway past Tiki Room)
-Tortuga Tavern daily serving Caribbean & Mexican food.

Frontierland

-Expand boardwalk for use during parade bypass.
-Rework stairs and pathway in front of Splash Mountain entrance to reduce bottlenecking.
-Expand walkway from Big Thunder Mountain entry to Big Thunder Mountain exit.
-Reduce Tom Sawyer's Island and re-imagine space.
-Build new pathway with bridge/drawbridge from Big Thunder Mountain exit to Haunted Mansion area.
-Prep north half of Rivers of America for expansion.

-Country Bear Jamboree receives update to reflect more country music timeline while still staying true to it's roots. Receives seasonal Christmas overlay. Both to increase attraction attendance.

Liberty Square
-Diamond Horseshoe becomes home to Woody, Jesse & Bullseye meet & greet themed to Woody's Roundup. Small root beer bar/snack stand also created inside.
-Liberty Square Market is removed. Liberty Belle won't sail, but serves as rest area, patio with prior queue as new Market place location. At night, Liberty Belle becomes a reserved desert party prior to parade. Old market location becomes additional parade viewing plus added green-space, most likely for FP+ viewing.
-Haunted Mansion queue relocated even more north west of show facade. Existing queue becomes new walkway to connect to Big Thunder Mountain. New mansion queue is among a more forested cemetery with an indoor mausoleum full of a more spread out interactive queue.
-Courtyard between old market and Harbor House has more trees and green-space with more organized designated stroller parking.
-Old Heritage House gift shop made into more seating for Sleepy Hollow.

Fantasyland
-Update PhilharMagic to increase attraction attendance.
-Breakfast available at Be Our Guest Restaurant
-Major refurbishment for Peter Pan's Flight.
-Major ride control system update for Winnie the Pooh to reduce stops/downtime.
-New circus /county fair inspired food stand added to back of Storybook Circus and open seasonally in old FP Kiosk tent.

Tomorrowland

-Replace Stitch's Great Escape with new attraction that will increase attraction attendance.
-Tomorrowland Terrace Restaurant open more often with new menu and remodel.
-Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress is updated to increase attraction attendance. (Increased soundproofing inside to reduce dance party noise.)
-Tomorrowland Speedway updated with new vehicles featuring bump prevention for safety. New scenery added.
-Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin receives major refurbishment.
-Space Mountain receives major refurbishment to replace track. New track allows for double seat trains with built in audio, more ride capacity, and will utilize more interior building space. Ride entrance reconfigured to be wheelchair accessible for standby line. Arcade area removed and used for more queue space and exit ramp space. Exit speedramp is shorted. New entry and exit area modeled into a futuristic airy spaceport with airy feel.
-Tomorrowland Stage home to new "ElecTRONica" dance party from California Adventure.

-Show ready holiday overflow bypass corridor created from Tomorrowland to Main Street. (Similar in style to current parade bypass being created.) Known as the "Time Tunnel" and features unique graphics displaying inventions from early 20th century to the "future" to help bridge time gap. Only open during peak periods. Think Grand Canyon Diorama meets Fremont Street Experience in Vegas used a bypass that will help traffic flow.
-Tomorrowland expansion pad prepped for new addition in parking lot behind Carousel of Progress.

So that's my Magic Kingdom plan. It features a few major refurbishments including a completely redone Space Mountain for added capacity and reliability. It adds a couple restaurant options, reduces some retail space, but makes up for it in the Emporium expansion. Couple new permanent meet & greet locations. Uses some dead/empty space. Relocates some stroller parking to less busy areas. Additional pathways help relieve congestion, especially around Main Street, Frontierland/Liberty Square, and Adventureland. We also completely replaced Stitch and prepped two new expansion pads for future use.

What do you think? Are some of these practical or realistic? Would they all help to increase capacity without expanding?

EPCOT
Future World
-Remove Leave a Legacy. Replace with green-space & added retail along sides including a new designated Pin store & trading location.
-Remove Innovention plaza pin trading shop and shade canopy. Add some trees, but primarily use as extra walkway.
-Fountain of Nations is remodeled. Proper stage is build on south side that is less intrusive.
-Re-imagine Innoventions to increase attraction attendance.
-Remodel Electric Umbrella and reconfigure layout, redo theme as high tech futuristic diner, and rename.
-Universe of Energy attraction completely redone with new ride concept with same energy theme.
-Wonders of Life reopens featuring new age Adventures through Inner Space, re-imagined Cranium Command themed to Inside Out, and health food cafe.
-The Seas with Nemo & Friends Sea Base get major remodel to bring aquarium up to more impressive scale and splendor.
-Circle of Life is replaced by Wall-E themed film featuring Buy-n-Large representing our current ways with Wall-E and Eve unlocking the path to a new way of living. Takes place after events of movie as sort of a teach the children of the Axiom how we returned to Earth and why we need to take care of it.
-Soarin' receives 3rd theater. Interactive queue games are updated to actually be engaging, and Soarin' over the World debuts.
-Journey into Imagination pavilion redone with new ride system, but same figment theme and new Dreamfinder. Magic Eye Theater features fun 3D show featuring Phineas and Ferb using their imagination to go on an adventure. Phineas and Ferb meet & greet in unused gift shop location near Magic Eye Theater. Imageworks re-imagined including upstairs location. Crayola brought in as sponsor.
-The Odyssey building becomes the new Festival Center and also used for more special events.

World Showcase
-Jose and Panchito join Donald at Meet & Greet in Mexico.
-Frozen attraction already created in Norway adds new attraction to Epcot line up.
-Mulan receives more formal meet & greet in China.
-Sommerfest is expanded with new window/kitchen where mural is in Germany.
-Via Napoli has pizza by the slice quick service window available in Italy. Pinocchio & Gepeto meet & greet added in Italy.
-Formal Big Hero 6 meet & greet in Japan with walk around mini San Fransokyo environment.
-Either redo Impressions de France or prep site for Ratatouille ride.
-Expand Rose & Crown seating in the United Kingdom.
-Redo rockwork in Canada to help hide Soarin' show building. Find replacement for lumberjack show.
-Remodel upstairs unused gift shop locations as a snack stand serving poutine, cheddar cheese soup, and deserts featuring maple flavoring in Canada.
-Expand viewing areas at front of World Showcase lagoon.

This plan for Epcot adds more attractions and brings older attractions up to date with newer technology and ideas to increase attraction attendance and spread out crowds. The added restaurant offerings as subtle and the extra meet & greets compliment each country while adding more for kids to do as they explore World Showcase. We primarily get a pavilion back in Future World and the Odyssey building finally has a better purpose with a closer location of the Festival Center to usually the rest of the festival.
