Hi All,

I just saw Mary Poppins this afternoon on Broadway...and it was Fantastic!!! I had a smile on my face from the moment the curtain went up until right now...

I can't wait to go back and see it again. The set was wonderful and it's amazing how they fit all of it backstage. If anyone's interested in seeing it, I definitely recommend it....

How close is it to the movie?

Is it better, not a great, or is it impossible to compare the two? :)

Well it's almost a three hour show so they couldn't just do the stuff from the movie. I don't want to spoil it for anyone but there are several new good songs and they took ideas from the other Mary Poppins novels but all the characters are the same. It was difficult to imagine anyone but Julie Andrews as Mary but Ashley Brown did a fine job as Mary and the guy who played Bert originated the role when it premiered in London.

The only problem we had was that in the final scene when Mary was supposed to fly out of the stage in the audience, her wire didn't work and as she's standing there, she says 'uh oh' to herself, I heard her since I was only 5 rows away from the stage, and then the stagehands had to pull her back in. Buth otherwise, it was wonderful in its own right.

When you ask is it close to the movie...it's similar to what they did with Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King... the story is exactly the same, they just add several new songs and sometimes change the scenery since they're dealing with a live set. For example, Supercalifragilistic had different lyrics and was set in a completely different atmosphere but was still wonderful.

One thing I will say about the show, is that they say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards actually the correct way. The movie version starts off by saying 'dociosali'.

DME, were you at the 2:00 show yesterday? If so, so was I! I was up in the 3rd balcony, but I too realised that something went wrong with her flight at the end!

I thought it was a fantastic show. My only real gripe is that the song just before intermission, "Temper Temper", has the potentiality to really scare some little kids. I also wish that "Feed the Birds" was played a bit more in the show, it seemed more of a passing tune, where it was a major theme of the film (and a fantastic one at that) , but I can't really complain. It was performed beautifully.

The show was very well done, although it DOES stray from the film quite a bit, but it is still a fantastic show. I haven't read the books, so i don't know how it compares, but I've heard that there are many similarities between the show and the books. Some things about the show are just magical (yes, the scene where Mary pulls impossible things out of her bag IS included!). The effects are top notch, the coreography is just mind blowing (Step In Time and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious [which is reprised several times, with different but equally complex coreography each time] in particular), and the set is incredible.

See it.

NOW.

Saw it on Friday 12/22.... Thought it was great!!! & Mary did fly... my friend who went with me swears it was a double at the end... I don't think so and I imagine there is a nice elevator waiting for her up top....

If you go into it with knowing that it isn't the animated film and not expect to see exactly what is on the film, then you will like it. It's closer to the books and things are in a different order but it was good. You could follow the story and realize it's alot more about the father's story with the children than just the dancing penguins...

I didn't quite get the dancing statue part... I guess it was just me...

Besides... I wonder how many parents went home with kid's asking "Dad... why was that guy naked???"

Also... and this should be noted to anyone who is going... There are kids that ARE too young to see this. There was even a baby in the audience. Take them to Sesame Street Live and leave MP alone...

I can tell you that it wasn't a MP double that flies at the end. I was sitting in the very front corner and saw here take off although she didn't take off since there was mechanical trouble but it was definitely her.

I didn't think it was a double either, but since I hadn't read too many of the posts on it before I went I was awed by the ending!!! She has to be seriously not afraid of heights and VERY trusting of the crew!!!

I'm thinking of taking my nieces for their birthday/Graduation celebration - one of them LIVED for MP when she was little!!!
