UPDATE: A logline for Spider-Man: Freshman Year has now been released revealing that the animated series "follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we've ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Executive producer Jeff Trammel serves as head writer." Amazing news, eh? Original story follows:

The wall-crawler has starred in many classic animated TV shows over the years, but it's been far too long since Spidey had a series aimed at a slightly older audience. Now, there's a chance this one will also be more kid-focused, but the fact that Marvel Studios is producing Spider-Man: Freshman Year for Disney+ has us excited.

When Tom Holland's Peter Parker made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War, he was more than likely a Freshman (he was a sophomore in Spider-Man: Homecoming). That could make this show a prequel to the events of the 2016 movie, meaning we'll be following the hero as he swings into action as a rookie superhero in that red and blue homemade costume.

Again, we're only assuming this is set in the MCU, but between that title and Marvel Studios' involvement, you have to believe that will be the case. Spider-Man: Freshman is also likely to be welcomed by those of you keen to learn more about Peter before he crossed paths with Tony Stark.

We don't know if Tom Holland will be back as Spider-Man, and this show is likely still in the early stages of development, but fingers crossed Marvel Studios plans to reveal more details soon.

A lot of people seem to think this might be another step in Marvel regaining Spider-Man whole. I talked to them and told them that was what I thought. Creating this show must mean Marvel has 50% control over Spider-Man by now.

Huh? Marvel (and thus Disney) has always retained the TV animation rights to Spider-Man. Sony only has theatrical rights.

Isn't Freshman Year supposed to be canon with the MCU? If it is, little odd to have Doc Ock on there consideration Peter's reaction to him in No Way Home. Or having Harry Osborn for that matter given Peter meeting Norman in NWH. (Also Scorpion was already teased in Homecoming)

Unless something came out today that I hadn't heard yet (or later this weekend), I don't think its been confirmed this was set in the MCU only people assuming it would.

Could also be explained away with “variants”.

They have specifically said this takes place in MCU Spider-Man’s early career before his appearance in Civil War.

If that was what was said ok, but everything I had read about this series before were all assumptions not confirmation. Heck it doesn't even look anything like Tom Holland (unless you squint your eyes) nor will this version of Peter be voiced by Tom Holland. So yeah I don't know how they would explain that as being the same Peter as in the MCU given that.

But that is not even the part that gets me..... Now that we know "Sophomore Year" was just green-lit, that is going to put that season directly in the Homecoming timeline. So unless they are going to have to references the events of that movie, not sure what stories they are going to tell.

So not sure how they are going to round out that square, but who knows.....

Official confirmation it’s a multiverse story. It’s basically what happens to Peter if Norman had showed up during Civil War instead of Tony.

Brad Winderbaum has played an integral role at Marvel Studios through the years, serving as an executive producer on titles such as Thor: Love and Thunder, What If...?, and more with producer credits on previous projects, as well. Previously serving as an executive on production and development at Marvel Studios, Winderbaum now serves as Head of Streaming for the franchise and appeared on the Marvel Studios Animation panel, where looks at Spider-Man: Freshman Year were presented (along with the upcoming I Am Groot series of short films). In promotion of I Am Groot, Winderbaum spoke to ComicBook.com in an interview on the Phase Zero YouTube channel, where he opened up about Spider-Man: Freshman Year's place in the MCU.

"Well, like we said, in the panel, it follows the pattern that you see in [Captain America:] Civil War," Winderbaum said of the animated Spider-Man series. "Down to Peter getting the broken Blu-ray player from the trash and he walks into his department for the famous moment where Tony stark is waiting for him to offer him the stark internship and take him to Berlin. But because of things that happen in the multiverse because of new, random occurrences, it's not Tony Stark who's waiting for him there. It's Norman Osborn and that sends his life in an unexpected trajectory that collides him with many unexpected characters in the Marvel universe."

So its basically What If for Spider-Man. So there is the answer on how this will fit into the MCU, its not part of the main MCU timeline.
