With the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by The Walt Disney Company came a whole new array of Marvel characters the big mouse never had access to before. Less than a year after the finalization of the mega-merger, it seems the company might already be giving one of its newly owned Fox characters its own stand-alone film and we couldn’t be more excited!

Rumors have been swirling since the original announcement of the Disney/Fox merger of the many possibilities Marvel Cinematic Universe fans could be looking forward to as the mega-film franchise moves into its new future with Fox. However, what characters or stories would be introduced first into the MCU have been up in the air–at least, until now.

According to a new rumor by GWW, it seems there’s been major talk that Marvel Studios is “actively developing” a Silver Surfer movie. What the film will entail and how the character will be portrayed are still up in the air. Additionally, the rumor does not include any talk of Fantastic Four characters being involved in the project. However, it would make sense given the fact that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned the inclusion of the Fantastic Four in the MCU only a few months ago at San Diego Comic-Con during the announcement of Marvel’s Phase 4.

This announcement of the Fantastic Four’s inclusion in the MCU at SDCC comes with many other reports and rumors in the past of the Fantastic Four characters possibly finding their way into the franchise.

For those not familiar with the Silver Surfer, he is a humanoid alien with metallic skin who can travel through space with the aid of his surfboard-like craft. The first time Marvel fans ever saw him on screen was in 20th Century Fox’s hit film “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

I'd rather see a proper Galactus - as part of a proper Fantastic Four, though not the first film - with the Surfer before him getting adventures on his own. I realize that would make a Silver Surfer film like 8 years away or something but it would be nice to have proper origins for these characters.

If this rumor is true we can probably thank Adam McKay.

Ant-Man co-writer Adam McKay has another Marvel character he'd like to tackle: Silver Surfer. He shared his wish during an episode of MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz while promoting his new Dick Cheney film Vice.

"Silver Surfer is the one I want to do, man. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because, visually, you could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer with the Silver Surfer," McKay said. "At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there, man, where Norrin Radd [Silver Surfer] has to make the choice to save his planet. That would be the one, but I think Fox owns the rights ... .”

When Horowitz informed McKay that Marvel's Fox-licensed characters would soon be on the table for the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney's impending acquisition of 21st Century Fox, McKay noted, "Alright, I’ll call [Fox Film chief] Emma Watts; I’ll call [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige. I think you’ve just created the Silver Surfer movie. I think after Dick Cheney and economic collapse, maybe I need a little break.”

January 2019 at the Golden Globes Red Carpet:

The host of the Happy Sad Confused podcast worked the Golden Globe red carpet and tracked both of them down. Feige was asked first, and deflected saying they haven't talked yet.

I've not gotten a call, but I've seen Adam tonight and at a number of these awards and he is not only, as everybody knows, an incredibly smart guy, he is a honest to goodness fan. And, you know, he did a lot of sort of behind-the-scenes help with us on the first Ant-Man film, and have you seen Vice? Little cameo. Little Galactus cameo that we helped him get. So I look forward to speaking with him more.

Then he ran into McKay and mentioned he just saw Feige and if there an update:

“(Laughs) There actually has been some discussion about Silver Surfer. My agent certainly woke up. They were excited. We’re in the middle of, you know, backing Vice right now, but, who knows, in a couple of months it could pop up. I really am excited by that idea. So, we’ll see what happens.”
