Marvel Moving Towards Taking The “Men” Out Of X-Men And Making Them Sing?

Could we be seeing a major change with the X-Men once that group first and finally hits the big screen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Some recent changes and promotions at the top of Marvel Studios would suggest the group, specifically, its name will look a lot different when they are folded into the action. Bounding Into Comics is reporting that with Victoria Alonso being named the President of Physical, Post Production, VFX, and Animation, this particular group could be looking at much different branding moving forward.

Some of this is conjecture of course, but things Alonso has said in the past in other interviews would suggest that she sees the X-Men as a name from a bygone era. Bounding Into Comics cited an interview she had done with Nuke the Fridge in which she said, “I don’t know where the future is going. It’s funny that people call it the X-Men, there’s a lot of female superheroes in that X-Men group, so I think it’s outdated.“ She isn’t wrong. The group was formed on the comic book pages nearly 60 years ago, back in 1963, and at the time it was (mostly) true. The first iteration of the X-Men was Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and Marvel Girl. So mostly men. But as their ranks have grown, so have the number of women in the group. The latter remain some of the most powerful out there.

Now, because the X-Men are named for Professor Charles Xavier’s (Professor X) tutelage, the name is probably pretty easy to change. And frankly, even in the movies, the moniker was used more from a branding perspective than anything else. The name “X-Men” is barely uttered in any of the flicks. Would some fans throw a fit if Marvel decided to just go with a totally new name? Probably, but in the end, it doesn’t really matter. The real payoff is getting this group of characters on screen in some fashion, name be-damned.

Additionally, it’s unlikely we see an actual X-Men movie in the near future anyway. It’s much more likely that we see characters introduced along the way slowly, brought into different stories, with a variety of solo films. That’s how they handled the Avengers to start, how they are building towards a new supergroup and it just wouldn’t be the Marvel way to have the X-Men come out all at once and then splinter. The Eternals are doing it that way, but that group is much less well known than the X-Men.

As for the singing? Well, that looks like something else that Alonso wants to bring into the Marvel mix. In the statement she released about her promotion to President in this role, she had a number of things to say about her vision of the future for Marvel. One of them came towards the end when she said, “I’m especially thrilled about ramping up our studio’s animation efforts, which is a personal passion of mine. Look forward to more singing!…” Does that mean Wolverine The Musical? Probably not, though we know that if they brought back Hugh Jackman he could definitely pull it off. More likely, she is meaning that the size of the universe, between live-action and animation, big screen and small screen, will lend itself to all manner of production. There is likely something in the works along these ends.

I think they will still have an "X-men" team assemble due to the power of name brand recognition. However, I agree that there will probably be several movies focusing on individual mutants before the team comes together.

I guess they could always use something like X-Factor or X-Force as the name but I am skeptical they would want to miss out on the brand value of the name X-Men.

Yeah X-Men is the game. X Factor X Force, dont have the recognition. I mean any of the characters in those that a common non comic person could name were previously X-Men members. Hell most people dont realize Havok and Cyclops are brothers or that Colossus sister is Magik.

Well since they just launched a new series of comics this summer still under the X-Men name I doubt if they'll be called anything else in the short term.

Feige is still President and Chief Creative Officer of all Marvel media. So he'll be the final decider when it comes to any creative decisions such as renaming the X-Men.

I hope this isn’t really a thing?

there are dozens of characters covering pretty much every background/variant you could want…

Disney making any attempt to “recenter” an existing franchise will probably go as well as the other attempts they’ve made…so maybe the shareholders need to push back and preserve the gravy trains?

I wouldn't worry about it, consider the source of this "rumor". Its all that site reading into the promotion of a Marvel executive nothing more. They even put it in the article, its mostly conjuncture on their part.

Feige is STILL in-charge of all creative decisions at Marvel. So nothing is going to be changed without his approval. And he hasn't changed anything yet that has really and truly upset fans, and I doubt he will. So unless its pushed down from above, and there is not even a hint of that in this article, I wouldn't push the panic button just yet.

What I can personally see happening is that they likely will use less of the X-Men name (as they weren't using it much over at Fox other than the movie titles anyways) and even the term mutant in general in the MCU. And if they ever do change the team name it'll likely still be some variation of Xavier's name, and it'll start first in the comics.

As for singing, I could see a Marvel musical episode for D+. But I wouldn't expect to see a whole musical movie for the MCU being put out.

So at this point this is much ado about nothing.

1) Calling new films things like "House of X" or "Age of X" or whatever is an easy way to rebrand and distinguish from the Fox films without dropping the connection to the comics - and be inclusive, of course.
2) I'd bet anything when the subject of singing came up she was referring to the viral mass hysteria over "Rogers: The Musical" from the Hawkeye trailer. People went crazy for it. I'd give anything to see that production staged at the Hyperion at DCA personally. :D

I don't really agree with this statement. If its not called X-Men, the hardcore fan is going to flip. Now I think this rumor is a load of bull, but if they did, it will severely hurt box office in my opinion. You need the mega fans to go to your movie multiple, multiple times. There's a whole contingency of people who dislike what Disney is doing with their wokeness. I don't think Disney is even that dumb.... Wait, on second thought, yea they're pretty stupid.

It’s just spitballing about Disney not understanding another IP they paid a lot of money for…the standard policy these days

…they should concentrate on making those live action remakes of the Aristocats and Treasure Planet 👍🏻
Ah okay. Got it. Now it makes sense. X-people or (maybe "people" are not PC enough) just X. I mean-mutants are fine.

or just make them all amoebas and other protista so they don't need genders lol.

If Ms. Alonso has a problem with the X-Men name, one should think about how she feels when our human race is referred to as "mankind". I would love to watch her beat herself up over this type of stuff.
