March Mania Season Three

Overview

Hello and welcome to March Mania Season Three (This year later than last year)! I am @kmbmw777, your gracious host. In this event (Note: This is not a competition), one can share their favorite projects that they have made previously in a competition or for fun! Then they are randomly pitted against projects of similar scale to go for the gain the title of grand champion (currently held by Xanadu and Monstrous Realms).

The rules are the same as last year - previous years high scorers have been given permanent or temporary retirement and cannot be nominated again. Then, in the order in which projects are nominated, a bracket is formed and the community will vote. My vote will be tossed out in the event of a tie, else I will be voting.

The four categories (or wings of the bracket) are as follows:

Freelance Mega Projects (Full Scale Lands, which can be taken or not taken from a fully developed park)
Freelance Mini Projects (Singular attractions, restaurants, etc.)
Competitive Mega Projects (Theme Parks or Full Scale Lands)
Competitive Mini Projects (Singular attractions, restaurants, etc.)

Now, I would like to ask that initially everyone only nominates one per category (so four total per person). After two days and if we don't have enough, I will allow for more nominations.

I'd like to submit the first nomination of this event. For Competitive Mini Projects by Team Princes of the SAU, my personal baby: The Laboratory Laboratory.

A new, interactive exhibit coming to the newly updated and expanded Rafiki's Planet Watch where YOU can take an active part in learning about one of the most important parts of the world's ecosystems just by using the restrooms!

After the opening of the Lavatory Laboratory, one part of the experience quickly became a viral success...

Hippos do an interesting thing when they poop. They swish their tail around which causes their fecal matter to spray all around. If they are near a wall, they even make splatter patterns. This comedic effect (Besides already being a favorite fun fact of the safari drivers) is demonstrated with a tongue in cheek mural right near the new restrooms.

This cheesey photo op with an educational plaque was meant by imagineers to basically just fill up some empty space. But, much like the #PurpleWall and the #BloodyWatermelonWall before it, #HippoSplatterWall became a sought after place to take pictures for Instagram.

Was it the lighting in this particular spot (being indoors mean controlled lighting)? The color contrast? the comedic nature of the backdrop? Who knows!

Me.

It's the bathrooms. what makes this photowall so special is being right near the restrooms. Since it is adjacent to the bathroom, people are able to freshen up and reapply their makeup or fix their hair before taking the photo. That's a big part of what makes it so popular. Get the freshly done up look even after hours in the park.

Maybe more photo ops should be built around bathrooms. Just look at all these happy picture takers!

Why, even the head of the Walt Disney Company himself had to get in on the action!

In order to cash in on the trendy craze, the Shop Disney Merchandise Team got right to work trying to cash in!

Though, they didn't want to use the fan given name of #HippoSplatterWall and started using the much more marketable name: Happy Hippo Merchandise Line! It worked especially well since the Happy Hippo was already used as a mascot of sorts for the Lavatory Laboratory on the buttons they gave out!

Thus, a new line of trendy souvenirs in the signature Hippo Green color were developed. The two biggest hits were the Minnie Ears and the Spirit Jersey!

The Animal Kingdom Starbucks Location (Creature Comforts) got in on the action be re-releasing a former temporary specialty drink that features chocolate whip cream for obvious, though not officially stated, reasons.

#HippoSplatterWall has become one of the biggest trends in modern Disney history while helping bring guests into Planet Watch to discover a fun, educational experience wrapped around environmentally friendly restrooms setting a new benchmark for all future bathrooms at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Since this is March madness, I decided to look at projects I did post March 2018. I REALLY hope I am not misunderstanding the rules, so as a prewarning, this post is all about things I did.

Epcot Mini Lands by @TwilightZone

Why: I chose this over other large projects I did because it was the most fleshed out. I was considering the My DCA post, but it had many things described as "this ride, but x". Part of the growing experience is learning how to describe rides, but goodness that is bad.

Freelance Mini Projects (Singular attractions, restaurants, etc.)

Wayside School is Falling Down by @TwilightZone

Why: I had a hard time choosing My Imagination theater movie (AKA The Great Galactic Showcase) or Wayside School is Falling Down, but ultimately I chose Wayside School. Because even though The Great Galactic Showcase had the better exposition/queue, Wayside School was more thought out with the ride, queue, and post show.

Competitive Mega Projects (Theme Parks or Full Scale Lands)

Competition: The Sorcerer's Apprentice: Endgame | Team: Warriors | People Involved: @TwilightZone and @NateD1226 (note other people were on Warriors, but we were split into mini groups) | Project: Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for Stanza 5

Why: This is very sappy, but honestly, I am very proud of our teamwork on this project and what our park turned out. Does it need some more? Sure, probably, but I think it was very well done.

Competitive Mini Projects (Singular attractions, restaurants, etc.)

Competition: One Little Spark | Team: Purple | People Involved: @TwilightZone | Project: Journey into the Subconscious

Why: I think this has to be some of my best writing for a competition yet. It is well fleshed out, has a good beginning, middle, and end, and is well themed. Not to mention it has area music. The only gripe I have, and I agree with the judges with this, is that I made it too dark. One day I might re write a lighter version of the ride.
