MARCELINE, Missouri (The Marceline Press) -- A recent non-fiction work published by Kansas City Star Books details the years Walt Disney spent in Missouri during his life, including those important years in Marceline.

Disney historian Dan Viets of Columbia collaborated with Brian Burnes and Robert W. Butler of The Kansas City Star on a 194-page, full-color edition entitled, "Walt Disney's Missouri -- The Roots of a Creative Genius."

One of the book's 12 chapters is devoted entirely to Walt's time in Marceline. It is a 16-page section featuring pictures of Coal Mine No. 1, the Marceline Episcopal Church, Park School -- including Walt as a second grade student there -- and the Hotel Marceline at Disneyland in California.

"The town of Marceline was the inspiration for many features of future Disney theme parks, and the pastoral setting he lived in there is also reflected in many of his films," according to the book jacket.

Information and photographs about Walt's return to Marceline in October 1960 for the dedication of Walt Disney Elementary are also included, along with segments about his short visit in May 1946 when he collected pictures of the area and the time he spent here in July 1956 for the dedication of the Walt Disney Municipal Park and Swimming Pool.

The unveiling of the U.S. postage stamp bearing Disney's image in September 1968 is highlighted as well, along with a photo of Disney family members in attendance that day. Plus, the original details and plans for the Marceline Project pursued by Walt and his brother, Roy, Rush Johnson, Bill Washam and others are included, as is information about the Midget Autopia ride from Disneyland that later came to Marceline.
