Maintenance and Upkeep

How is the current maintenance and upkeep at the parks? Last year we heard a lot of complaints about attractions like Splash Mountain having entire scenes broken. Has the situation improved?

It's been getting a whole lot better; just look at the attractions that are due for refurbishments in these next few weeks. I've noticed a lot of work being done at MK and Epcot this weekend. Things seem to be getting progressively better.
Seems to have been getting better. We went in June, and all seemed well except for the crowds, heat & humidity, storms, lines, etc...;)
Yikes! I remember reading your TR. Yes, June is a really crazy time to visit the World!

Splash is greatly improved. Almost everything at MK is up and running. Everything at Epcot was good besides the paper boy in SSE, but that went down for a refurb so I assume that was fixed. Everything at DHS is good, but at AK dinosaur is a mess and so is Everest.
This was from 2 weeks ago when I was in WDW

As maybe one of the most critical people I know on show quality, I would say show quality is improving overall at WDW compared to a year or two ago and earlier. Some attractions look great. Generally the parks *look* pretty darn good.

Still a long way to go though before it reaches the level that DLR is at. Or Universal's ride and show quality, which is now generally much higher than WDW's although that would not have been true three years ago. Many attractions need attention, and some need a lot.

What is the problem with the paperboy on SSE. He was working when I was there in January. I realize that was a while ago, but did he stop yelling Extra - Extra? What up with it?

It got so bad they turned him around so now he's facing the wall rather than you, and his arm no longer moves

Everything was good when I went earlier in the year. I thought Pirates might need some general maintenance work but other than that, everything was pretty good

Just came back from a trip last week, and have to say that everything looked really good.

One thing I did notice though is that those little round stickers that cast members give to kids were all over the place. Don't get me wrong, my daughter loved getting them, but the cleanup must be getting pretty old for the WDW staff. I wouldn't blame them for dumping that program in the near future. ;-)

Glad to hear that! We've never really had any complaints (we were just giddy to be at WDW!), but did notice a few things here and there. If others are noticing improvement, even more to look forward to on our upcoming trip.

From what i've been hearing, Disneyland's maintenance has actually begun to slip with Michael Colglazier at the helm. I don't know about other rides, but Disneyland's Splash Mountain was looking pretty bad from youtube videos a few weeks ago. There were a lot of non-moving animatronic elements everywhere (including a ton on the riverboat). Perhaps not as dirty and structurally falling apart as WDW's was pre-refurb, but it was actually starting to resemble its WDW counterpart from a show perspective in those videos. If his experience with Animal Kingdom is any indication, Disneyland could be in for a rough ride ahead. WDW1974 already mentioned he was doing a very poor job so far in one of the spirited threads.

While I haven't been to WDW personally since early 2012, everything i've heard has indicated that WDW's maintenance improved noticeably when George Kalogridis took over as president from Meg Crofton. WDW's Splash Mountain was of course already closed for refurb before he was brought in, but after reopening it has thus far mostly avoided descending back into poor condition months afterwards. Under poor leadership from Meg Crofton, the ride would have already fallen back into disrepair shortly after reopening, even if the refurb itself had been as much of a success. From what i've heard, it still sounds like WDW's is in pretty fantastic condition.

I've also heard there has been maintenance improvements to Maelstrom and apparently Spaceship Earth. Not to mention Dinosaur got some of its fog and laser effects back that have been gone for years (though we'll see if that Carnotaurus is fixed that someone mentioned in news and rumors). Tiki Room I heard in one topic had its closed refurb canceled, but has instead received refurbing while open, and they supposedly fixed some of the non-moving parts on it broken for a long time now. They also did some TLC to parts of the Peoplemover I believe (progress city got cleaned up at least). There are some other rides that are scheduled for refurb or are currently closed that we'll see how they turn out (Jungle Cruise is closed right now and they seem to be doing some show-scene work at least). Last I heard, Small World was pretty dirty throughout and had some missing or stationary dolls, we'll see if the refurb addresses anything about that. And Peter Pan is I believe closing fairly soon for a bit.

I hope they keep up the refurbs happening around WDW and get things really cleaned up and in proper working order. Though I hope Disneyland doesn't end up getting trashed due to Colglazier's incompetence.

The barking dog returned to the Land ride. Thought he had gone to the big dog pound in the WDW graveyard.

Norway has improved the grossness of their queue and attraction however some of the remedies are not fitting to the rides theming which I find a bit curious but hey, still better than dripping water, mold and holes.

I'm trying real hard to think of something that is better at DHS this year.

Didn't someone mention the Alien scene had a broken alien animatronic or something a while back that was finally fixed? On the wall or something? Dunno. I also heard in the Muppetvision topic that the physical elements were looking pretty darn good after being refurbished.

Tower of Terror probably needs some major TLC though. Heard the sound system was in very poor condition lately, and maybe some other things. Hope it gets some attention soon.

My DS had the best experience this year on the Tower. It broke just before they dropped. They were stuck like 45 minutes, CMs from all different departments kept stopping bye to entertain them. Finally they were walked off and were able to see so much stuff, a fake behind the scences tour. He really enjoyed the broken attraction. heeheeheehe

Regarding DHS:

GMR looked great the last time I rode. Star Tours 3D generally looks and sounds great and still brand new. Rock 'n' Roller Coaster looks and sounds much better than it did a few years ago. For a while the onboard audio was weak and would cut in and out. Now it always sounds very loud and powerful. Toy Story Midway Mania generally looks and sounds fine. Muppets actually looked better the last time I watched it than ever before.

The oddball at DHS is Tower of Terror, which is unfortunately the flagship attraction. It's show quality has been bad for years. As mentioned before, the audio is terrible in many areas and lots of very simple effects are broken or look bad.
