Kind of depends on what you mean by "upgrade." There are dozens of different designs you can buy and link to your My Disney Experience account, and it is easy to do. So that is sort of an upgrade from the standard, complimentary magic band, an upgrade you simply pay for by buying another magic band design.
If you are inquiring if they will allow you to receive some sort of credit for the standard band toward the purchase of a different one, no, those are yours to do with what you will.
