Magic Bands & What is to come in the real world...

My fiancee and I were talking about how cool this technology is and it got us to thinking how Disney is probably leading the way on whats to come. Think about it. It was just a few years ago they came out with Paypass. Thats the little chip in your bank card and you wave it over the reader. Then NY State issued Enhanced Licenses which have a chip in them as well. Disney seems to have taken the identifier info and the purchasing info and combined them all on one neat slick and cool looking and I imagine somewhat comfortable band. We both agree we can see this sort of technology coming very soon for your everyday life.

Take a moment and imagine. Life Band.

One band that unlocks your car (Tech is already there) when you get near, sets your seat preferences, radio station, phone settings, GPS, weather, temperature, you name it all to your liking and pre programmed settings. Wife gets in and her side does hers and susie and johnny in the back it sets it all to theirs.

Walk up to your front door, it unlockes and lets you in and automatically locks behind you. Security system which is your all house system to control your heat, lights, entertainment systems. Says welcome home Mr.& Mrs. So and So. (Tech is already there). Sets lights to your pre programed time of day settings, heat turns to what you like, tv turns on to your channel of liking, and so on.

Your visit to restaurants they know every meal you have ate there. They know your drink of choice, how you like your meat cooked, what you always order for appetizer and what you will get for dessert. Sure you can order what you want still but they are able to try to be a step ahead. when you arrive at your table your drinks and appetizers are waiting and so on.

No more cash to carry. just your band and you know your pin. Less theft of cash. Sure take my band but its useless. Especially if they use retina or most likely facial recognition then no one can fraudulently use it. Sure there will be rare cases. Your grades, ID's like license and social security info is all encrypted on the band. It functions as a watch, has LCD screen (Under Armour is working on clothes with built in screens/monitors) to display info when you need it, check email, listen to MP3's, browse the internet, use Siri, call friends and family, everything would be stored securely in the cloud.

The possibilities are limitless. Theme park experiences will be brought to a whole new level. Marketing will get quite interesting. You will get that personal attention in many places you don't get it now. Because now they know what you like, when you like it and so on. Its easier to sell me cologne when you know what types of cologne i seem to gravitate towards.

We for the record cannot wait to see how Disney incorporates this into their parks. Bring it on.

it will be just as secure as everything is now if not more.
Folks young and old. This is the future. You will be able to run from it for a short while but eventually like everything else it will catch up to you and you will have no choice but to adapt or be left behind. It is just on the horizon and it is going to be pretty cool if you ask us.

Maybe the house will talk back, like on Eureka! ;)

I don't want a house that gives me a greeting. I don't even like my house to beep-beep-beep when I open a door. I'm very big on technology from a medical or military standpoint. And I like clear TV, better pics and my iStuff.

But I could happily live without the rest of it.

I'd prefer my 2014 to be as far away from 1984 as possible.

I enjoy technology and consider myself a tech buff but I prefer to have control over when it is used in my life and when I can ditch it to enjoy privacy/peace and quiet. What you're describing is, quite frankly, a nightmare to me.

Oh @HM Spectre you will still get your peace and quiet anywhere you want. For example when you are sitting on a sunny beach in Saint Maarten with the cool breeze whisking through your hair and the beach steward walks up to your holding your favorite ice cold drink not only you will be enjoying your peace and quiet you will be happy you didn't even have to ask for a drink or explain what you wanted, nor reach into your pocket or dig through the sand filled sandals for your wallet. You can't get anymore peaceful service than that. :D

So they're going to be bringing us stuff we didn't ask for and charging us for it?

Doesn't sound idyllic to me.

The oceanside hotels I've stayed at I didn't need a wallet to order drinks, simply charged them to my room....

And without the insidious concern that the bartender knew what I wanted before I did.....

Lets take it one step further and inject the RFID chip right at the base of our nervous system, so that we never "forget" where it is.
And even further, lets just make this the only form of payment that can be used......for anything.....ever. This would make it so easy to track everything you do, every calorie you eat, every cigarette you smoke, every movie you watch. Heck, lets just wire that sucker into your neuro system so anyone who wants hack into you can just tell everything that you do.

If you think they don't already know what you are doing then you are living under a rock. All this will do is make it easier for them and more convenient for us. They already can see where you're shopping, what you're buying, I could care a less at what they see on me. I have nothing to hide. If they want it bad enough now they can get it anyways. Eventually we will all be implanted. For now we will have to settle on wristbands. But think of the health aspects you bring up. Smokers will pay higher premiums for smoking and people such as myself won't. My Dr can check my health at anytime. See if there are any issues I might not be aware of. For those with health issues if something happens this is a medical bracelet to the 1000th power. All your vitals can be taken from it for the past so many minutes or days, can store all your allergies and med's if you can't speak. it would save lives no doubt.

And I never said you had to buy the drink nor do you have to. But they knowingly would pre make the drink of your choice in hopes you would buy it rather than just guessing what you liked and risk wasting it. Less wasteful and a very nice touch if you ask me. Listen i'm not expecting everyone to jump on the bandwagon. Its leaving town whether you are on it or not. I'm just pointing out IT IS COMING and what it is most likely going to improve or change in your life.

Billboard and commercials would show things you are interested in now. Heck Google and Facebook do this now. Ever notice you go research wedding dresses and for the next few months everywhere you go on internet flashes wedding services at you?!!? Its not a coincidence. I'd rather watch tv or listen to the radio or see bill board or posters that change to the products and services I use. Show me the new video games coming out rather than the new coach purse. Show me the new BMW series, rather than the Town and Country Family Van. I hope I am not sounding like a self centered egotistical schmuck. But it would be nice if things that are marketed were actually appealing and in one way or another concerned me. Right now marketing is so hit or miss. I also like the convenience aspects of this technology. Especially since I have lost my key ring (Which has never happened to me before in my life) and by losing it I have lost my house keys, my car keys, my fiancees car keys, our condo key, and countless of other important keys. Sure the same thing could happen with the Life Band concept. but i feel it would be worn by me a lot that if for some reason I took it off I would immediately feel out of place and get it back on. Where as my keys I have no idea where I set them down.

.
All fine and dandy until someone with power thinks that you breath too much oxygen and taxes you for every breath you take.....and you just so happen to breath twice as much as the next person.......

I think you are hinting to the movie "Time" I believe with Justin Timberlake. It was a good movie by the way and I see the fear that people have with this but I just don't see it happening. I must be one of the lambs with wool over it's eyes. I want it to enhance my life and yours. Make us safer, healthier and have more enjoyable experiences wherever we go. As long as it isn't being abused it will all be good. Remember anything can be abused. Things are being abused all around us but the people keep it in check... somewhat.

Back onto the positive track. Anyone else see how this could positively enhance and improve our lives in the real world and not just in WDW?

Actually, a more accurate reference may be to the book of Revelation......

The corrupted will abuse.

The people keep it in check by not allowing themselves to be a part of such a program.....

And if this has little to do with WDW, why is the thread in General Discussion?

Frightening thread here.

Can't we just talk about our favorite resort specific t-shirts, instead of a terrifying future?

I'm not sure it's improving anything in WDW. Not for me, anyway. Have to wait and see on that.

I don't think they'll be making drinks on spec. It would waste a lot of alcohol and lose money. Plus, there is no way for them to know what drink you want. Maybe you usually get whiskey sours, but today you feel like apple pucker.

I think they'll still wait for you to order the drink before making it. But now you have to wear a band for it, where before, you didn't.
