Magic Band Question

So I have a question: A friend of mine informed me that if I buy a new magic band, that it no longer has to be linked to my account. I find his above statement to be obviously erroneous, how else are they going to figure out what this magic band does. So a little clarification by you fine folks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The MagicBand does not need to be linked at the time of purchase, but will not function until linked to an account/ticket.

Hmmmm so I guess he was correct.

This is a fairly recent change though. As late as this past August, you had to link a special edition band when you purchased it.

But now, you can just buy bands until your heart's content. They just won't do anything until you link them to your MDE account. And once you link a band to an MDE account, it's linked forever.
