If you haven't yet seen them, there are pictures of Lucky the Dinosaur over at MouseInfo.com. The article said that Lucky will be at Disney's California Adventure for about a week, and that after the trial, he will get some adjustments and will most likely head to Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida. Check the pictures out, he looks pretty cool.

What exactly does Lucky do?

Its the first ever audio animatronic to walk arount on its own without being bolted to the floor. A wizard lets guests interact with luckey who does not have any rpogrammed movements, but controlled from a backstage person. Here is a link to another site that has great pictures and footage of this amazing achievement in Audio Animatronics.

I'm not sure why Lucky is attracting so much attention. As I point out to my family every time we go, all the squirrels at WDW are Animatronic!:D Absolute marvels of miniaturization that make Lucky look clumsy!:animwink:

You know, this Lucky character sound really awesome! I guess it can be hard to say what exactly they'll be planning to do with these "free roaming" animatronics. My guess is that they could use them for parades. It would be cool to see Lucky or something like it walking on its own in a parade, interacting with the crowd. This way they can have a character who doesn't obviously look like a guy in a costume interact with guests.

The other thing that I think is kinda cool about this guy...and his apparent "wizard friend", is that they are original creations. Disney could have gone and made Imagineering turn an already popular Disney character into a free roaming animatronic, yet instead, they actually made their own charaters. I guess that's not the biggest thing to be surprised about, but you have to admit, Disney has recently been making darn sure that any new attractions featuring characters would use characters from a Disney movie or something (ala the new Tiki Room, The Magic Carpets, Philharmagic, and all these rumors like adding Stitch to A:E or putting Nemo in The Living Seas). I mean, this "Lucky" guy and his wizard friend almost remind me of a similar duo that was created from scratch and became quite popular, original characters (Figment and Dreamfinder).

Hopefully they plan to do something with this newfound technology sometime in the near future for some new attraction....of course, for now, I think we can all be entertained by random Lucky appearances.

I think that it's really great that we got a chance to see this new technology, whether or not it really falls inside of DCA's theming

Actually, Lucky and Chandler (the Dino Handler) remind me of Dinotopia, the TV series/book that ABC aired last year (I think).

I'd read about the resemblance to Dinotopia elsewhere, too. (Never saw the show myself.)

MousePlanet and MouseInfo both got slashdotted earlier today, so if response time isn't great, give it a day and try again.

That's an excellent point that I hadn't thought of. Good show!
