Loss Damage Waiver coverage

In the 20 years or renting cars, I've never opted for this insurance, taking the risk that the car wouldn't be totaled. I was just curious of what others do in this case. I know there are other insurance options that can be purchased as well.

Many times your own auto insurance will cover any damages to a rental car. We have AAA and we're covered under our policy.

About 7 years ago, I was on the receiving end of a car accident in which the at-fault party did not take insurance, had none of their own, nor a credit card to cover them.

I was paid, but it took 2 months of dealing with Dolllar's Subrogation department and at least one strongly worded letter on attorney letterhead. Oh, and they wouldn't provide a replacement from their fleet.

The insurance you have for your own vehicles also covers rentals, however, if the rental car is totaled, I'm told it's another story. You would be on the hook for whatever your insurance company doesn't pay and what the rental car company says it's worth. The supplemental insurance through most rental car companies costs about $25 per day extra.
