Living Near Disneyland

Looking for a change of scenery and thinking I'd like to try my luck for some production crew jobs in and around LA. I know very well I can't afford LA and wouldn't mind being based near Disneyland. I don't know the area very well so I'm looking for advice as to where to live.
I'm looking for a safe area with low rent. While I like things to be quiet I would like some comforts near by (restaurants, grocery, shopping).
Any recommendations are welcomed...thank you.

As you may or may not know, Disneyland isn't located within Los Angeles County. A commute from Anaheim to Los Angeles for work isn't a good idea, in my opinion.

What would you consider low rent?

I remember about an hour drive...I drive that now for work...I guess with rush hour we're looking at more. Thanks for mentioning that.
What about half way between?
I'm thinking low as in under $1000.

It will take probably two hours to get home (if you're shooting for Anaheim). I'm 30 minutes away from my job and it takes me an hour to get home, but it could be different for you.

With that budget, you should consider getting a roommate. Long Beach is a decent halfway point between Los Angeles and Anaheim.

I'll check that area out. Thanks for the tips.

I live a few blocks from the resort, which is where I work. The area surrounding the resort really isn't the best, and I'm happy I don't have to walk to and from work. Rent here for a 2 bd/2 ba is $1785 for a very average apt, and the whole area is over $1000 for any size apt.

If you live in Orange County, there is affordable, safe/nice, and near the resort, and you get to pick two. Affordable and nearby? Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana. Safe/nice and nearby? Orange, Irvine, Costa Mesa. Affordable and safe/nice? Somewhere in LA county, likely, or out in the Riverside/Corona/Pomona areas.

Depending on where in LA you're gonna be working, check out Santa Clarita. A lot of filming happens out there, and it's an hour from DL if you aren't heading down during traffic, but I've had it take up to 3 hours. There are a wide variety of homes and apartments, but it would be good to consider a roommate.

If you work in the film industry Anaheim is going to be a terrible spot to be. Way too far away from la proper and the valley which is where most of the work is

As other's have said, it would be best to live in LA if you want to work in the film industry. In fact there is some geography bias. If you apply for a job and they find out you are too far away they are unlikely to hire you.

The stereotype about LA traffic is true. It is horrendous. Live in LA and then visit Disneyland when you want.

First off, I want to say I'll never discourage anyone to follow their dreams. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!!

As other's have said $1000 in LA is not much especially since we are going through another crazy real estate bubble. For $1000/mo plan on roommates or if you're very lucky a studio apartment without air conditioning.

Also as others have said, unfortunately the industry jobs and Disneyland are on opposite side's of the world in LA. Most of the industry jobs are going to be west or northwest of downtown LA. This means you are going to have to drive through or around Los Angeles everyday, just like 7 million other people :). On a good day 15 miles in LA = 45 minute drive. 30 miles = an hour and a half. I've had hour long commutes before, but they were relaxing and audio book friendly. In LA I can't listen to audio books because I can't hear them over my own voice cussing out other drivers :)

Much of the area immediately around the resort isn't great. I like downtown Fullerton north of Anaheim, but it is very urban. Expect homeless people on the corner. If you want nice in LA, stay close to the ocean. It's going to mean much higher rents and much longer commutes, though.

If you really want to be in the industry, I'd recommend the edges of Santa Monica or Hollywood. You'll be fighting with every other person in the industry for an apartment though, so expect to spend some time looking. I live in Long Beach and love it, but I think it would be the worst of both worlds for you if Disney and production are your priorities. It's still about 40 minutes door-to-door to Disney even though I can hear their fireworks, and at least an hour (on a good day) for most of the studios.

Hope this helps. Good luck, and never get discouraged!!!
