Live Pirates in Adventureland

We were in MK on 12/16, and experienced something we had never seen before. Live Pirates walking around in front of POTC, mixing and mingling with guests. I had seen them before on the small stage doing a show, but never like this, and there had to be at least a dozen of them. It was very cool and entertaining to see.
The question I have though, is this something new they've just started doing, or is it just a random occurrence we happened upon?

We stumbled upon the same pirate interaction on 12/17. It was awesome! There also was a film crew, a photographer and some staff (who told me they were testing this). Everyone was there - Jack, Barbossa, the Commodore, random pirates. Our family ended up being part of Barbossa's crew on a mission to find Jack. All the actors were awesome! Later that night when I was viewing our Memory Maker photos for the day I found 12 from our interactions I didn't even realize anyone had taken of us. Hope they continue this because it was one of the highlights of our vacation.
