Lifetime Partners with the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations on New Drama 'For the People'

July 16, 2002

NEW YORK (PRNewswire) -- Lifetime and the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations are teaming up to inform women on entering the legal profession and to support them on critical issues raised in Lifetime's new original drama, "For the People." Following Sunday night's (July 21st) premiere of "For the People," Lifetime will air a public service message with the show's stars Lea Thompson and Debi Morgan to encourage women, from diverse backgrounds, to go into law in order to ensure justice for all the people. The PSA will direct viewers to lifetimetv.com for more information and resources.

"With 'For the People,' Lifetime Television tackles issues women face personally and professionally, demonstrating the success we can accomplish when we work together for our common goals," said Nancy Newman, President of the National Conference of Women's Bar Associations. "'For The People' shows women that achieving professional success does not diminish the positive impact we can make on people's lives, and puts us in a better position to work for justice in our society."

In addition, the verdict on "For the People" is already in from several other leading national women's and law organizations. From the National Organization for Women to the National Women's Law Center to the Ms. Foundation for Women, key advocacy groups are hailing the new series for portraying women in powerful leadership positions and addressing critical legal, ethical and social issues.

According to Kim Gandy, President of the National Organization for Women (NOW), "The Lifetime series, 'For the People,' presents women and girls with powerful role models and serves as a great educational tool on important legal issues."

"'For the People' brings the important legal issues of the day to the forefront," said Marcia D. Greenburger, Co-President of the National Women's Law Center. "Shows like this one play an important role in informing women how they can use the law to protect themselves and their families."

"While women are graduating from law school in record numbers, we are still not equally represented in positions of leadership," said Marie C. Wilson, President of the Ms. Foundation for Women and The White House Project. "The Ms. Foundation for Women commends Lifetime for its commitment to showing diverse women in nontraditional careers and encouraging women to remain true to their convictions."

"For the People" is created by Catherine LePard ("7th Heaven") and executive produced by LePard, Kim Moses & Ian Sander ("Profiler," "I'll Fly Away") and Sheldon Pinchuk ("Nash Bridges," "Any Day Now") for Cumulus Productions.
