I was thinking about these a couple of months ago. I followed a link through the photo section of this site and ended up on a blog about iphoneography. Apparently there are people who live and breathe this type of photography. It looks interesting, maybe if you google iphoneography it'll show up.

Some people are crazy about the iphone and lenses and mods. I have tried it, but if you want something that works and is easy I would suggest the lens from Amazon.

We need time for things to happen.
I heard about this, but just never got to digging around about it. It sure looks cool.
I'm curious as to the pros and cons of it. I know the Iphone takes a pretty decent picture, I've taken a few that have surprised me. I'm just not sure what level these lenses would take the Iphone to. I mean I know it won't replace a nice SLR but how much better than a point and shoot with a decent lense will this be?
I'd love to hear from some of the camera experts around here to see what they think about this.

I can't imagine it is any better. Maybe, maybe, during the day with the sun out but I've never had anything close to a good result on my iphone in lowlight. Even a simple P&S will do much better for that.

And just so the OP knows, that link to photojojo.com is only for the lens mount, not the actual lens. The lenses they show attached to the iphone are Canon L series lenses which cost thousands.

Remember that these are really just convertors, or placing some other lens in front of what is already there on the iPhone. It will give you some different focal lengths (more zoom, wider), but will do little to improve the image quality. If anything, I would expect it to be worse, as you are adding another level of distortion in front of the existing lens.

Save your money and put it towards your real goal.

No need to jump all the way to a slr if you have nothing to start. There are two major levels of cameras before you even get to interchangeable lenses.

Mega zooms and other fixed lens cameras can give great shots in most situations. Don't jump to an expensive camera just because you need a camera

I have a camera. I want a nice camera for my honeymoon. I was just told about these lenses and wanted opinions about their quality.

I know I'm going to get slammed for this one...but a phone or any "i" device...no matter what kind of lens you put in front of it, will disappoint you in one way or another. They may market them as being "awesome", but if they were that good, then there would be no market for P&S's or DSLRs. What you posted is just a mount, no lens included..so at the end of the day you will end up spending about as much as a point and shoot would (maybe more). If you're going to get a good lens, might as well save up to get the body it was designed around.

Absolutely true. My wife uses an olloclip and loves it, but image quality is slightly worse with the olloclip.

I didn't say I blow them up to 27" - I said I look at them on my 27" inch. Point being - they can still be enjoyed beyond your narrow view of what is 'necessary'. The camera can serve it's purpose. But I think trying to make the camera more than it is - is just foolish. Kind of like those people using their iPads as cameras :)

Goto any parent/child event (like a little league sport or something) and you see this non-stop. It's soccer moms with their iPads mostly because they carry them everywhere. I have no problem with people using stupid or bad cameras, but using tablets is very very distracting to those around them :/

I use my phone for spontaneous captures - and use my Nikon when I'm going somewhere where I want possibly long term, or 'nice' photos. Trying to make the iphone anything but a pocket camera is like trying to get blood from a stone. It's a suitable replacement for a low end point and shoot - but throwing big glass in front of it isn't going to inherently change it all that much. Especially when people are talking about spending hundreds of dollars, or look like fools with big lens about to fall off their little phone :) My iphone has stopped me from taking my Canon pocket camera places and its still a concious decision to take my Nikon with me someplace. The iPhone is good for spontaneity, even with a lower capability then my point and shoots. It's 'good enough' for the purpose.

yeah, I agree ... I use my iphone all the time for things I really don't care about... just sharing with friends or whatever. But I'd never bust out the iphone and try and show off an image, phew... no way. I'd rather come off as being smug then try to make the argument it's a "great camera"
