"Legendary Disneyland cast member Maynard Smith has announced his retirement, after 28 years working attractions including the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and more.

He has become well known over the years for his comic impressions and antics, to the point that sometimes visitors seek him out at whichever post he happens to be working. In fact, he has not one but two fan sites on Facebook, where people post sighting and photos of him in the park.

However, Smith posted online Wednesday that he’s planning to retire April 1 and devote more of his time to his art, both he and his “twin brothers,” which is what he calls his alter egos in the park.

“Our hope is that we will be able to fulfill a longtime dream of combining visual arts and humorous storytelling (illustrated children’s books, greeting cards and short videos),” he wrote in an announcement to his fans. “We will also be considering other creative opportunities, like voice-over for family-friendly productions, commercials, etc.”

Smith, who grew up in Garden Grove and now lives in the San Bernardino Mountains, has been commuting to Disneyland regularly for years. When he’s not in Anaheim, he paints, sculpts and does voice-overs.

“Every once in awhile, a cast member becomes a star in their own right,” said MiceChat.com blogger Todd Regan, who uses the name Dusty Sage professionally. “Maynard is one of those shining stars. When you hear guests excitedly telling each other that a certain cast member is working an attraction, it is almost certainly Maynard. Having Maynard as your Tiki Room host, Jungle Cruise skipper or just as your friendly, but quirky greeter anywhere in the park is like finding a 4-leaf clover.”

Smith, who started at the park in 1993, said his retirement is not an April Fool’s Day joke."

“I’ll be in the park on and off through April 1st, so feel free to stop by and say, ‘Howdy’ ” he wrote in his goodbye message."

I wonder what Maynard was making per hour. I wonder if Disney will give him any kind of retirement package. I wonder if he had a corporate title. He couldn't have been just a $15 an hour cast member. He'd eat up his entire paycheck in gas just commuting to work.

I wish I could find footage of him as a Jungle Cruise skipper! The video on YouTube of him in the Haunted Mansion is great and every time I've seen him has been at the Tiki Room and he is just epic.

Maynard is truly one of a kind but embodies the spirit, love, and pride in his role that every cast member should show in their part in making the magic.

We do need more cast members like him. It would be better than the dead eye ones they seem to be hiring now. He cared about the show and customer service. He loved his job. He may have been a little over the top at times and needed to remember the attraction is what people come to see, not him. But still, I wish more cast members where like him to an extent.

Rereading this, it's like he died or something. I hope he enjoys his retirement.

He was so over the top and annoying. If every cast member acted like this, it would be a zoo. I know some people love the schtick, I found it tiring and grating. YMMV.

I find him as annoying, and thats not a knock against him, just my own opinion.

Does Disney still highlight their CMs. I remember reading about the CM of the month is Disney Adventures magazine.

One time we visited and recognized our Jungle Cruise skipper as the one from the magazine that month.

Have to agree. There’s a way to still be a great CM with dedication to the job and park without the over-the-top theatrics.
I didn't ride Enchanted Tiki Room when he was around because I learned very quickly his spiel was way too long and I genuinely disliked it.

That being said, I commend his love for the role and his clear impact in the park and I wish him all the best.

I 100% agree. I too wish him the best and admire him for having that type of energy for Disneyland guests for so many years.

When I was a CM, I worked with a woman who was also very theatrical, but more so in a seriously irritating way. She would make up lyrics based on the ride and would sing them to the guests before sending them into the ride, oftentimes backing it up and nearly causing it to go down. She drove us all nuts. One day, I was coming in to replace her for Snow White. I witnessed her doing another round of theatrics for guests, yet again. I took over the controls and the guest that I welcomed into the ride vehicle looked at me and said “thank God!” and rolled his eyes, clearly overjoyed that he was spared a made-up song by my co-worker.

I wonder if people acting this way thinks it will make them stand out and will advance their career either in the company or for being an actor/actress.

It’s possible. My co-worker was retired, though. Lol.

She often talked about how much she enjoyed working at the park because it was genuinely fun and she didn’t have to think much. And she worked part-time. She was only working there because she had become bored after retiring from her career. I was happy that she was enjoying her retirement, but her made-up songs about Snow White, Peter Pan, and Pinocchio nearly drove me to drink.

Sharing the magic is wonderful but some CMs are oblivious as to how they come off. I've had to extricate myself from a few. There was a security woman who would cause us to do a u-turn and change our plans when we saw her.

Oh got it! Definitely not the situation I was thinking of. Guess she figured since she was retired she had nothing to lose.

So sorry you had to put up with that though!

This occasional tourist has never encountered him, but from reading the responses here, I think I would have enjoyed the experience.

Once.

He was my Enchanted Tiki Room host once which is kind of crazy as I’ve only seen the show 4-5 times in the last 10 years. I like his personality and the fact that he enjoys his job and engages guests. Much better than most of the other grumpy lifeless CMs these days. The Enchanted Tiki Room spiel though? It was a little cringey for me. I don’t even remember what he said. Only that it was long and a little cringey.
