A movie that does nothing amazing, but also does nothing terrible, Paparazzi is a nice enjoyable film to end the summer with. Obviously filmed a few years ago, the film was most likely held back due to sensitivities regarding the unfortunate death of Princess Diana. However the times have changed, and now the film feels strangely normal. The story deals with Bo Laramie (Cole Hauser), a new Hollywood starlet who begins to fight back against four photographers who have made it their mission to destroy his life. The movie becomes a character driven piece, where no one person shines as good.

The movie seems to want to be an action film, but none of the action is very exhilarating. Instead, the movie delivers a smoothly concocted tale of intelligent vengeance. Instead of thrilling chases and fights, we receive Bo’s ingenious ways to off his enemies one by one. Cole Hauser performs well as the lead. His eyes convey so much thought. Despite his imperfections, the viewer finds themselves cheering for him simply because his motives are so understandable.

Leading the quartet of sleazy photographers is Rex (Tom Sizemore), whose performance really causes us to hate him. He is believably selfish; is actions all the more frightening because they are so real. Also delivering a solid performance is Dennis Farina as Detective Burton. The Special Investigator assigned to the car crash that puts Bo’s son is a coma helps provide tension, and thus saves the movie from being so-so.

The best part of the film (for me at least) had to be the editing. The opening scene gives us an idea of what it must be like on a red carpet. Short shots of off-center people also helps carry the photograph-type feel of the movie. The biggest shortcoming is that it doesn’t do anything phenomenal. It’s not a bad movie by any means… however it’s not going to cause people to run out and want to buy the DVD.

It’s a good film. As the summer of 2004 ends, Paparazzi at least delivers something better than garbage. It may not be amazing, but at least it’s real enough to enjoy.

3 OUT OF FOUR STARS

Overall Summery- It’s the end of summer, and this might be one of the better movies that you haven’t seen yet. That’s not to say it’s a great film, but it ain’t bad. Also, it has three surprising cameos. If you’re bored, give it a look.
