Laptop Question

Yesterday I made the change from Desktop computer to a laptop. This is the first time I've owned a laptop and have a question that is probably common knowledge, but those are usually the things I tend to have the most problems with. :p

Is there a way to set it up so that I can shut the laptop without it logging me off of AIM and making me log in (the XP startup screen) every time I reopen it? Thanks.

If its plugged in-- just put it on sleep. Then you don't have to log into XP.
(so says Lil'mermaid, she has a Dell Inspiron). If its not plugged in just shut it down completely to conserve the battery.

Don't know about the AIM because she doesn't use the internet with it...thats on my desktop.

Well when i leave my computer on for a while and do not touch it my computer automatically puts itself in sleep mode and shuts me out of instant messanger and such. It does it to save the battery, but when i come back to my computer it always ask me if i wanna log back in. Hope that helps.

when i put my laptop on sleep mode AIM shuts down :( i dont think there's a way. but you COULD try to set the screen saver so it shuts the monitor down after its idle for 10 minutes or so... i dont know how to do it in XP but in 98 its in the settings folder

im not sure if thats the solution you're looking for but i hope my suggestion is a bit of a help to ya :)

I think the only way would be to leave it connected to the internet at all times. I forget to sign off AIM and when I come back hours later (or the next morning) its still on. (we have DSL)

Do you mean "close the laptop" without being signed off? I have one but I can close it and come back to it while online and everything is still there. There is a way to set it up so it stays on when it´s closed, but I have tried with no luck to put it on sleep to save battery, but it disconnects me from the internet all the time.

If you mean just closing the lid on the Laptop, WinXP has an option in "Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced" That lets me select what happens when I close the Lid, be it Nothing, Stand By or Hibernate.

If set to "Nothing", then it will do what it says - it will stay connected to the Internet and everything. I would obviously only recommend this when you're running connected to the Mains Power rather than the battery :)

Hope this helps :)

As guwag said, you can do it with the three modes. I've had my laptop since Novemeber and hated it shut off or log me out and close everything when I closed it but found that option and now I can close it at night and not have it light up my whole room and still keep my online (and logged into WDWMagic). Hope you got it all worked out and it's fixed.

hehe... I meant what Guwag said... but he knew how to phrase it - lol
I hate when I am working on my friend´s computer and when I close it, I lose everything. Mine was set this way from the beginning, so I really didn´t remember where to do it.

:)
