Would you choose Kona or skipper canteen dinner for a MK day? How's the food at Skipper? Any pictures?

Thanks guys! You never let me down ;)

Hmmm...that's a tough one. I've had lunch at both places, and thought they were both good. If you don't want to take the time out to leave MK, Skipper Canteen will be a nice meal in an interestingly themed place. If you want a break from the park, Kona will give you a nice meal at the Poly. Kona Cafe itself isn't overly themed, not like 'Ohana. Their breakfast is great, lunch or dinner is on par with many other WDW table service.

Check out the menus for both restaurants and see what tickles your fancy, and then use the "do I want a park break" filter. :)

That probably wasn't very helpful.

I love Kona for lunch only. Dinner has been lacking and I haven't gone back. Skipper Canteen is a little too adventurous for us so we've never been. I would say it depends on your palate, that probably doesn't help much, but I also agree with all that @Tiggerish said above! :) enjoy!

Skipper Canteen is shooting itself in the foot with the menu descriptions, I think. They try to make it sound exotic but it's not really. "Tastes like chicken" is actually just grilled chicken!!

I really enjoyed the sustainable fish dish served in broth with some vegetables. Admittedly, I'm an adventurous eater who would eat fish every day of the week, but I dined with a group of girlfriends of varying tastes, including a "meat-and-potatoes only-don't eat green stuff"' person, and we all enjoyed our meals. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to SC, in hopes of getting the butterfly booth, or dining in the library. Our table was in the skipper's mess, and we had a great time thanks to our server. She was awesome, we could really believe that she could have been a skipper.

Kona is my MK breakfast of choice. The Tonga Toast and the macadamia/pineapple pancakes are to die for, along with the Kona French Press coffee.

You might look at Ohana for dinner, however. I had the skewers and loved them. Just depends on your tastes. I also love the Spirit of Aloha dinner show, BUT I advise against doing it on a MK night. You'll miss too much time in the park.

For me it would depend on what I was planning to do next. If I was planning to stay in the MK and continue to park-storm, I would go for Skipper rather than going out of the park. But if I was planning to go back to the hotel after lunch, then Kona would be a great option.

Yes we've been to ohana a bunch of times but wasn't so pleased with service last time around so this time we would like to try something new. I do want to try spirit of aloha but I'm on the DDP so trying to keep meals at 1 credit

Here are a few pictures from our last visit to Skipper Canteen. It was actually the day they put out the new menu.

We went with Skipper Canteen (after perusing menus and reviews) for our upcoming dinner ADR, and as someone who is wont to complain about WDW food being too bland and Americanized, I am very excited about the more exotic Skipper Canteen menu! (That being said, Kona wasn't seriously in the running as an alternative, since we were already doing dinner at 'Ohana and didn't want any of our ADR choices to overlap too much in terms of theming, menu and type of dining experience).

Skippers' Canteen is as good as the server you happen to have. Had dinner there in early August and had a great server. You can tell he was "testing" the waters with my wife and I to see how far he could push the skipper routine, and once he saw we were all in he was a blast. But I noticed the table next to us had a family of 4 from Denmark who had no idea what the place was all about. With them, he was a straight-up server with none of the skipper routine. The food was very good; I had the sustainable fish which was quite tasty.

We had dinner at both restaurants in August and I can say you can't go wrong with any of them.

Kona has a menu with Asian touches and DW considered it the best restaurant we visited in this trip. I had the ahi tuna and it was excellent. The server was very good and really patient, since I had to translate everything back and forth for my family. He even made sure I knew that the tuna was prepared rare, but that wasn't a problem, since it was exactly what I wanted.

Skipper Canteen has a more diverse menu, with African and South American touches, and a nicer atmosphere. We were seated at the S.E.A. room, I had the grilled steak and the fried yuca planks were perfect. The shu mai was also very good. Just one caveat, however. They have two "exotic" soda flavors in the menu, one being Kuat guarana soda from Brazil, a local brand made by Coca-Cola. As a Brazilian who grew up drinking guarana soda I have to ask: please don't have it. There are many other brands better than Kuat for you to try and I don't want to ruin your experience with our local flavors.

I had the same experience. My waiter dropped a couple of funnys, and when he saw that I responded well to that we had a great time. He did one thing, though, that still baffles me. He asked me if I wanted a FastPass to that night's fireworks. When I said that I did, he threw a straw at me. I didn't get it then, and still don't. But overall it was a fun lunch!

Our "skipper" took note of my downing my first soda rather quickly (it was really hot outside), and said "oh, we have a thirsty one here". With that he came back with a tray full of sodas which he proceeded to put in front of me. I thought it was great!

It could come down to this: Both being equal in the food department, you can get alcohol at Kona while at Skipper you can't.
