This is a known issue, but Knott's has a deadline now, so expect a closure in January until the logs get modified.

The news article can be found at the latimes.com main page.

They've taken the article off the main page. In summary there have been forty-three injuries on the ride in the last half decade. Minors make up more than half of these cases, with one in particular leading to a lawsuit. It has been determined that Knotts is responsible for improving the safety of the ride, including monitoring water levels, and has until the end of January to do so.

I remember seeing something about why on micechat. Didn't some kid's eye get popped out or something? it's been a while since well, micechat isn't the best.

Anyways if I plan on going next summer to Knott's, should I expect it to be open by then?

Yes, Knott's has been actively working on the retrofit.

I see it closing after the New Year when the kids head back to school, so say January 8th, and with a hopeful reopening for the Boysenberry Festival in March. The logs themselves don't have to be changed, just the innards.

Sorry, just got home from working a political event, and was going to post the link, here is a key paragraph.

>>
The state agency, in the inspection report presented to Knott’s Berry Farm on Nov. 9, imposed eight requirements on the theme park, including a mandatory inspection by an attraction designer to ensure that the padding, floorboards and handrails are adequate to “prevent injury from contact during the moments of movement.”

The park also was ordered to determine the proper water level to ensure that the ride vehicles slow safely. In addition, it was instructed to “enhance the means by which they provide safety instructions to patrons as they board the ride.”<<

I remember I could stop the entire log at the spot where the sluse would drain into the water. It would turn off just before you got to it. I could slow or stop the log until it turned on getting the back passengers wet. Of course I did this back when I was a Teen, getting my older brother drenched in the back.
