Trip Report Kirk and Connie's Birthday Blowout Bash Live! (Sorta)

We're here! Celebrating our birthdays, but mostly mine, at Walt Disney World. We've been here so many times in the past but never together during the first week of March. I have come solo a few times for my birthday and love this time period. It's not too crowded, the weather is perfect, and... its my birthday!

I'm starting this report from my room at Pop Century on the night of Day Three (of our five day trip) and will begin telling the story of our trip soon. Stay tuned!

DAY ONE - Travel, Check In, and The Disney Hollywood Studios

First, just a brief introduction. I'm Kirk and I'm celebrating my 40th birthday this year. Connie is one of my dearest friends, a huge Disney fan, an even bigger Star Wars fan, and the best person to travel with because we are both very independent and don't mind separating at times to do what we want without any drama or difficulty.

We decided to fly Frontier instead of Delta this trip; the only flight out left at 12:50pm, which is unusual for us. Typically we're up at the crack of dawn and heading for the first flight out. Instead (and because we're returning on different days) we drove to the airport seperately. I got there first and discovered that Frontier doesn't staff their desk until 2 hours before the flight. This wasn't really a problem, but I was itching to get through security and eat lunch. I grabbed a Hot Chocolate (with a shot of raspberry) from Starbucks and waited on some very comfortable chairs until they opened the counter. Once they did, I was third in line and dropped off my bag without any problem at all. In fact, the clerk was very friendly. Connie, however, reports that whoever checked her in was not nice and started things off rocky.

I got through security quickly and without incident, as well. Again, though, Connie reported that the TSA Agent was yelling at people, being generally unpleasant, and stressed her out a little. Because Frontier is in a different Terminal than Delta I didn't know what food options I had. The first place I saw was Subway, which would have been a solid backup plan. There was a sit down place starting lunch at 10:30 (it was now 10:45) called Locals so I grabbed a burger and fries and waited for Connie. I thought maybe she was going to head down to Terminal B and get Chik Fil A and come back but she had some pulled pork sliders with me and we headed towards the gate.

Frontier was very efficient at boarding us, filling up the plane very quickly. I lucked out and got the whole row to myself. Connie was across the aisle from me. Because I'm 6'4 and a little wide this was a wonderful first birthday present. The pilot announced that we would be there in an hour and 30 minutes, shaving a half hour off our usual flight time. Once we landed, we bolted off the plane (we were in the third row) and that was great except we waited for what felt like forever for our luggage.

Once we secured our bags, we headed to the Dollar Rental Car Express kisok, updated our information, and headed towards the beautiful Kia Optima. It was a deep maroon color, which made it very easy to spot in parking lots for the rest of our trip. Connie is the designated driver (she rents the car) and so she got us through the tolls and to the Pop Century right around 3pm.

Neither of us had paid our room off because we both had our credit cards hacked shortly after booking our trips. I was very wary of paying anymore on Disney's web site (even though I doubt it was the culprit). I also wanted to try to sweet talk my way into a King sized bed if necessary. It turned out that it was not; for the first time ever I secured a King Bed and even a handicap accessible bathroom, which makes me very happy. The shower is so much nicer and I love the movable shower massage head on my soon to be sore back.

We dropped off our stuff, took a minute to breathe, and then departed for the Disney Hollywood Studios (where I'm writing this report from as we speak - but three days later!)

More soon....

I have now moved to the soon to depart Writer's Stop. I wanted to write something in here before it goes away with the changes being made to DHS.

We arrived at the Studios, parked about as far from the gates as possible, and immediately headed to Guest Relations so that Connie could activate her annual pass. Once that was accomplished, we made our way to the ABC Commissary. I got the Chicken Club; Connie got a salad. We were disappointed to learn that the wonderful Raspberry Lemonade they used to sell here was gone. Another of the multiple casualties at the park.

After dinner we walked around, browsing Tatooine Traders, The Writer's Stop, and spent a little time on the virtually abandoned Streets of America. I lamented the loss of Mulch, Sweat, and Shears; Connie did too but she'll miss the Osbourne Lights more. It may sound like a very depressing exercise to walk around back there but we found it to be therapeutic to say goodbye before we usher in the new.

We had FastPass+ for Toy Story Mania and I won, again. She's beaten me one time. I didn't win by much, though! Next we headed into the Star Wars Launch Bay, which Connie didn't know much about. She loved it. We watched the film and she was crying a little. We then walked around and looked at the various costumes and other new features in this building. Connie has a shirt she wants to wear when she meets Kylo Ren so we said we'd wait for later.

Connie bought a stuffed Flounder in honor of our friend, DJ, who played him a production of THE LITTLE MERMAID in Arkansas in December. We then walked through the Villains shop, debated about getting a caramel apple, and ultimately decided the line was too long. Our friends Dante and Alisa showed up and we grabbed a seat by Minn and Bill's and prepared for the fireworks. We had a great view and I love this fireworks display!

Afterwards we said our goodbyes, walked through the shops on our way out, and headed back to the room to get ready for a full day of my actual birthday!

That's an interesting perspective about coming to terms with some of your favorite attractions, that are going away. Glad you were able to see these things one last time.

Oh, Happy Birthday by the way!

I'm sitting in front of the Plaza Restaurant at 10am on my last day at the park writing this next installment of our trip report. What a beautiful view of the castle while I write. It's magical.

We met outside our rooms at 7:00am on Saturday morning to head to the Magic Kingdom. It was my 40th birthday and we had breakfast reservations at Be Our Guest at 8:35. We'd never been inside Beast's Castle before and we were excited to have that experience. We had pre-ordered last week so we knew what we were eating.

We arrived quickly to the parking lot and took the resort monorail, which was pulling up as we walked to the top of the loading station. We got the Magic Kingdom and found a huge line of folks with reservations. They were checking our Magic Bands and then lining us up. people were very concerned that they wouldn't make it in time. We were quite relaxed, however, and enjoying the gorgeous weather. They finally let us into the park and we leisurely strolled down Main Street and stopped to take a few pictures of the castle.

LIVE: The Trolley show is starting live so I'll be back in a few!

We walked back to Be Our Guest. It was only 8:05 so I asked if we were too early. The cast member said, "You're here, you're hungry, go on in!" So we did. We looked in the West Wing but it was already almost full and quite dark so we settled for a seat against the windows in the main dining area. I got our drinks - the Coke cups for breakfast were "kid" sized - and our silverware and sat down and waited for our meals. Connie had the Eggs Florentine while I had the meat and cheese plate. Looking back I probably would get the Crossiant Donut if I were go again but also I don't know that I would go again for breakfast anyway. It was fine but not really worth the fixed price point. While we were eating, I booked lunch reservations for the Skipper Canteen for 12:35.

We leisurely ate, took some photos (I'll have photos when I return home!), and paced ourselves as we walked over to the Mine Train Coaster thinking that we would line up. The cast members said "only the FastPass line is open." We said, "That's fine, where do we go to line up?" and he said, "No, I mean, you can go through the FastPass line right now!" We ended up in the front of the car. I barely fit and probably won't ever do this again as its not worth a long wait and it wasn't comfortable and the ride is lackluster to me. But I'm glad I did it once! Getting to walk on was a perfect birthday present.

We then walked through the queue for Peter Pan; this is such a gorgeous attraction from start to finish. The new effect in the line was totally worth it and while we were able to walk on because it was early I could totally see riding during a busier time now that there is stuff to see and do while waiting. We then hit up the Haunted Mansion. Again, we walked right on. Connie wanted to browse the Passholder pin options as the Frontier Mercantile and I chatted with a cast member about the weather and my birthday.

We got in line for the Jungle Cruise, which had a 20 minute posted wait time and it was every bit of that. While we were in line to disembark, the boat stopped for at least 15 minutes while they fished someone's cell phone out of the water. Seriously, hold on to your belongings folks. The poor skipper was running low on material but he did a great job entertaining us while we were waiting, even trading barbs with the skipper behind us. It was not a big deal; we were seated, relaxed, and had nowhere to be anyway.

We headed to the Castle hub and watched Dream Along with Mickey and then waited for Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It which has been updated since last time I saw it. I loved the addition of the screens and the new music probably makes it more tween friendly but I will always remember fondly the initial incarnation that really felt more like an impromptu street party.

We then walked back to the Skipper Canteen and checked in. We were seated in the Secret Room and everything about this experience was perfect. Or host was funny, the server was in character but not to an annoying degree, and the food was lovely. Connie got the appetizer Arepas with a side of rice while I had the Mac and Cheese. The pasta and cheese had less flavor than I anticipated but the beef was seasoned very well. I enjoyed it, though a sharper cheese would have made it more impressive. Connie didn't need the rice as the portion of her appetizer was plenty. We shared the Kungaloosh for dessert, which was a little on the small side. Very delicious, though, especially the carmelized banana.

While we were eating we made contact with our friend Olivia who we made plans to meet up with at Epcot. Stay tuned!

We drove to Epcot and parked back in the Create lot. We took the tram to the gates, breezed through security, and took a few photos in front of the topiaries by Spaceship Earth. We found Olivia and headed towards the Baymax Meet and Greet. We all made our way back to Nemo and walked right now, followed by a walk on of Living With the Land. We deided to walk back around the World Showcase Lagoon and see all the flower and garden stuff. We made it to the UK and stopped for a minute to listen to British Revolution.

Now, Connie and I had reservations at Le Cellier but with Olivia in tow we wanted to cancel. We went back to Guest Relations at the International Gateway and I pled our case for a legitimate change in plans and wondered if he could get us a third (I knew he wouldn't be able to) and he agree to cancel them for us without penalty. Connie and Olivia had a Lemonade with moonshine from the BBQ kiosk in America and we all had dinner at the Liberty Inn. Connie dropped her hot dog on the floor and I decided that it was because two sips of that drink made her drunk (not true). It was funny. Disney, of course, replaced the meal no questions asked.

Afterwards, we walked over and listened to American Music Machine; as a fan of live entertainment in theme parks I was very disappointed in this. The song choices were bizarre and the voices didn't blend well. There were pitch problems, which cannot happen in acapella singing. They were followed by "The Orchestra," which features members of Electric Light Orchestra. "Evil Woman" was OK and it went downhill from there. Oh, well. They can't all be Billy Ocean, who I loved a few years ago. By this time, we also met up with our friends Dante and Alisa.

We walked around the rest of the World Showcase and stopped to ride the boat ride in Mexico (it'll always be El Rio del Tiempo to me). Then we stopped in Club Cool, got our Passholder artwork from the F&G Festival, and rode Spaceship Earth. We had a photo taken in front of Spaceship Earth. Olivia went home, the four of us walked through MouseGear, and we headed back to our rooms while Dante and Alisa met another friend for Illuminations.

t really was a delightful way to turn 40.

TOMRROW: Back to Magic Kingdom!
