Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has outlined a new strategy for hiring and maintaining actors in the MCU.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Feige explained that Marvel is moving away from the massive, multi-movie deals it once offered to its stars. Instead, he hinted that the talent will stay on board and return for additional projects if they're enthusiastic about the universe they've become a part of, without needing an expansive contract.

"It varies, project to project, cast to cast," Feige explained, reflecting on the sweeping talent deals previously inked by the likes of Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson. "Really, what we want are people that come in, are excited to be in the universe, are excited at the opportunity to do more things, as opposed to being locked into contractual obligations."

I wonder if this is a way of hedging bets by moving away from a ‘steady cast’. Presumably if you’re not locking stars into multi picture deals you can use the threat of recasting to keep salaries from increasing when someone wants twice the price for the sequel, or maybe Marvel is moving to more single standalone movies without ongoing movies

Marvel's got such a deep bench of characters, that if one actor balks at a follow-up movie, that character can easily be written out of the ongoing story.

Or, a new actor can take up "the mantle" of that comic book character (cf. Captain America). Or an alternate universe version of the character can show up.

Marvel's also get a deep bench of actors tripping over themselves to be part of the biggest movie franchise ever. They're constantly interviewing well-known actors without even having a role for them, just in case a role does open, they know who to call.

Last thing any franchise needs is an actor unhappy working for them under contract causing issues.

Hopefully these interviews mean they can feel out actors about how they feel about being on "the small screen" (D+) and doing conventions and interviews. They want team players who make the brand look good. And it seems there's no shortage of well known actors willing to do so.

It also means Marvel isn't contractually obligated to include a troublesome actor in the next franchise movie.
