Hello,

During our next trip down to Orlando, my parents and I want to take a day and spend some time at Kennedy Space Center. There also happens to be a space shuttle launch during our stay, which we would love to see. If anyone has any suggestions or tips about the Space Center itself and whether or not parts of it will be open to the public while the shuttle is on the launch pad, good places to watch the shuttle lift-off, traffic flow, etc. Many thanks in advance!

You might want to check the KSC website, or even call them to find out. My family and I are also stopping there on the way to WDW, but our trip will be after the launch.:D

Definitely go to the web site. They do bus ya out for viewing on launch day if you buy the passes. I would imagine they are sold out though. Since 911 things have changed, but they use to open the Visitor's center to the public after the launch; but it was really crowded on those days.

If you have a car just head West on the Beachline(528) and head for Cocoa Beach. We like going to the pier and paying the minimal free to watch from the pier, but just about as good from the beach. Basically any beach in Cocoa Beach, Patrick Air force Base, along the river from Titusville to Cocoa, or on the causeways are good free spots to watch from. If you can't get over to Brevard County for the launch you will be able to see it from Orlando, but it is much more exciting to watch from here.

I believe that would be East on the Beachline from Disney Property, since the Beachline ends at I-4. ;)

I used to monitor those traffic cameras and such for a living and update the 511 system, so I have a thing about making sure directions are correct.

We saw Atlantis launch last September from Titusville. There are some great parking spots along the waterfront but beware of the fire ants! Really is a great experiance if you can get down there.

OOps yep, I meant East! I guess I am just more used to going West on the Beachline to get to Orlando. <g>

Also if you do go to the Space Center........watch the canals( ditches to people from up North<g>) along the road that goes to the Visitors Center. Usually you will see aligators in the water or on the banks. Don't stop and get out to wasee them, though because it isn't allowed.
Also sometimes there is a gator in the pond near the Astronaut Memorial so check out the water there, too. If no gators there are usually some soft side turtles etc, to see.
I haven't been to the center since it became a "theme park" and started charging you to see what our taxes and purchase of the Shuttle tags for our cars paid for, but there used to be an art gallery in the theater building that had some pretty good paintings that we enjoyed seeing too. It is free to us locals a couple times a year but we never seem to be able to get out there then. The Center was our Sunday afternoon trip for years and years with the kids and out of town visitors, so we miss going out there. One of these days I may have to break down and buy the Florida pass so we can see what is new.

If you do go to the space center , check out the canals along the road( to you Northerners ,,,the ditches) . Sometimes you will see aligators in the water or on the banks. Also check out the pond near the Astronaut Memorial because there has been gators in there before, too. The pond also has some soft shell turtles and fish that you will be able to see, too.
We haven't been to the center for years, but there used to be an art gallery that had some pretty good art work of rockets, shuttles, etc. that we used to enjoy. It was in the theater building before they started charging entrance fee like a theme park.

If you are a teacher, they had packets that teachers could get to use in their classrooms so ask about that while there. Not sure if it is still available but used to get lots of ideas and pics back when we would go on our Sunday drives that usually ended up at the center.
