July or August?

Hello!

I have the opportunity to visit DL in either July or August of 2017.

I've only been to DL in mid-September before.

Is July and August crazy busy? Is there any time during those months that is ok crowd wise?

Thank you!

Spring and Fall are actually busier than Summer these days. Due to the number of annual pass holders, The AP blackout dates are now a a better indicator of crowds than holidays. With that said, it's still busy during summer but not insane. Between July and August. I would try late August. As long as it's not the week the SO Cal AP blackouts are lifted and you re ok with the Haunted Mansion possibly being down. Or another option - Believe it or not, the parks were not busy at all on 4th of July weekend.

The first week of July is always the busiest, with the July the 4th weekend.

Mid to late August tends to be the lighter of the Summer Season (early June is usually about the same).

But Disney has started to open up the lower priced Annual Passes to visit during the last half of August, plus now the Los Angeles Unified School District has stated they will start a week later (August 22nd) in 2017, and the last week of August in 2018. They are the largest School district on the West Coast and have an impact on the parks.

It will be crowded no matter what, but come in August to get a better shot at seeing the new Fantasmic.

Agree on August for Fantasmic!. Just check the Annual Passholder blockout calendar and try to pick dates where the most level of APs are blocked out, then the crowds will be the lowest.

I imagine with "August," I could run the risk of the "Haunted Mansion" and "Space Mountain" being closed due to the Holiday change over?

No but you could be in for heat stroke. August is one of those months where night can be as hot as day.

Not during the days when all the APs are unblocked, from August 20th or 25th onward.

Follow the AP calendar. The more AP's blocked out the better your vacation will be for all sorts of reasons; crowds, rehabs, parking, operating hours, etc.

Haunted Mansion usually closes the last week in August for a two week changeover ending in the Sept 9 - 12 area (depending on where that September Friday falls), so as long you don't show up on August 28th or thereabouts you should be fine. Heed @TP2000's advice on the AP blockout calendar and you'll be good.

The last week of August before Labor Day is historically a good compromise with low crowds (on the weekdays) and most of the peak season lineup operating. This means fireworks each night; but, typically - no Fantasmic (just Fri/Sat/Sun). This is why we typically go this week each year.

Next year may be a bit of a curveball as Fantasmic may be nightly because it will have only been up and running for at most 2 months by then.

Plan on Disneyland always being busy and just plan accordingly. If you get there for rope drop, have a good strategy, and nothing breaks while you're in line to mess it all up -- you can almost always stay ahead of the crowds and have a pretty productive day at the park. Knock out all the big stuff by lunch and then you have the rest of the day to casually wander and enjoy the park. It honestly never fails for me.
