I think it's pretty crazy they literally just built over the old ride track/pit and it is still in place under the floors. I do think (and I risk getting yelled at here) the original needed an update, even in 1998, and certainly if it were still open now, would have been updated one way or another by this point.
The 1999 version was awful and the 2002 version is somewhat better but pales in comparison to the original. An updated, more modern version of the original with today's technology for effects would be phenomenal, but alas it is not going to happen.
I think it's a shame about the turntable as well, a cool effect that couldn't be completely perfected with the tech of that time. I doubt it would be an issue to have it working correctly in 2015, but it is destroyed beyond repair as far as I know.
