Jim Hill on Stitch redo of AE

While searching through the archives of Jimhillmedia.com, I found this:

"Thanks for the kind words regarding JHM. As for the "Stitch" themed redo of WDW's "Alien Encounter," my sources at Walt Disney Imagineering tell that this project really is a go. WDW Guest Relations is reportedly tired of dealing with the constant customer complaints about how terrifying "AE" is to children. So the Imagineers are hoping -- once they load this much lighter, funnier, kid friendlier show into the old "Mission to Mars" theaters -- that these complaints will stop.

To back up what the nice folks over at www.wdwmagic.com have been saying, I too have heard that WDW's "Alien Encounter" will be closing sometime in the Spring of 2004. The current (extremely tentative, mind you) timetable calls for three to four month long rehab. The revamped attraction will have a soft opening sometime in the late summer. August at the earliest ... September at the latest. With the all-new "Alien Encounter with Stitch" having its official grand opening as part of WDW's annual October birthday bash/press event.

I know, I know. Some of you thrill monkeys out there will be sad to hear that this scare-filled sensory thriller is actually going away. But Disney's in the process of turning WDW's Tomorrowland into a more family friendly environment. Building on the success of "Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin," so to speak.

So look for "Alien Encounter" to get "Stitch"-esized sometime in 2004. And WDW's "Carousel of Progress?" Well, that's still being eyed as the possible site for an all-new enclosed version of that old Disneyland favorite, "The Flying Saucers." And -- if the clone of the Hong Kong version of Space Mountain that's going into Anaheim is met with lots of guest enthusiasm -- you can bet that WDW's version may go under the knife as well in the not-so-distant future (2006 or thereabouts).

Beyond that ... if you're even remotely nostalgic about this version of "Alien Encounter," now might be a really good time to rack up a few more visits to the Tomorrowland Convention Center. Better yet, if you'd like to make a killing on eBay in a few years, now might be a good time to drop by the Magic Kingdom's "Merchant of Venus" shop and/or "Once Upon a Toy" at WDW's Downtown Disney and pick up a few "Alien Encounter" toys. I mean, who knows what this stuff will be going for in 2014 ... long after Chairman Clench, Dr. Femus and the rest of XS Tech crew have beamed back to their home world?"

I guess if Jim says it's so, it's so. I just hope Disney makes this worthwhile! Did you catch the part about Flying Saucers? And that WDW may get the SM redo in 2006? And I didn't know that the DL redo of SM was a clone of what they are building in Hong Kong!

I'm sorry, but that is a horrible idea to change AE! I've told families who are waiting in line that it is a scary attraction, and for the most part that haven't gone. I hope AE stays the way it is!

Look at my signature under Walt's quote. That's what I think. The reason why there are so many complaints, is that some dumb parents are ignoring all the warnings. PLEASE DON'T PUT STITCH HERE DISNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO TOUCHING SKIPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :fork:

As much as I love Lilo and Stitch, I think AE is fantastic, even for an 18 y/o (as I was at the time) its still very scary - and a very different experience.

As I mentioned before, I did not like Lilo and Stitch. In fact it was the first Disney movie that I didn't watch all the way through. It was boring to me. Yes WDW is a place where adults and children can have a good time together, but there are still those who like to be frightened. Parents these days seem to be getting irresposible. If it says it's in the dark and frightening to children then maybe children shouldn't go.

Some small adults are scared too. Perhaps the signs should be more blunt like "Warning - Will Mess your Pants!"

you should really try it again- i didn't like it the first time, but it really grows on you, and it is funny! (at least to me)

anyway, I LOVE AE, but i do not think it belongs in the MK's tomorrowland... i think the entire attractions should be rehabbed and moved to Epcot, and then just put a Stitch attraction in tomorrowland... but I really enjoy AE, so take it to Future World at Epcot, it would fit in fine... minus the education part... but come on folks, HISTA, TT, M:S... not that educational... lol..

I don't think that it will work in EPCOT. It has aliens, monsters, teleportation, thrills, not very educational. M:S, and Test Track do have learning factors in them. AE is better off in Tomorrowland.

Well it certainly seems that AE is grown alot in popularity recently. Maybe Disney is making a mistake.

And I am another one that finds this attraction to be hillarious. The one liners and the expressions of other people make this attraction top notch. You can go into AE at any time and just watch other people and enjoy it as much as anything else in WDW. Even though I really didnt do that much because I love the show so much. Wow I guess we aren't going to see original storytelling that good in WDW for a long time. I can at least wear my new A.E. shirt with pride at the MK.

Oh yeah that brings up another question. Is A.E. going to be the first attraction to close that they actually made merchandise for? If that is the case wouldn't this be the first E-Ticket removal is WDW history? (And yes I know some would consider WoM and Horizons to be E-Tickets too but I think when they create T-shirts and action figures for an attraction you have to set it on a different level).

I totally agree that A.E. is a perfect fit for Tomorrowland. It's one of the very few things in the Magic Kingdom that teenagers like in the park. Especially those that arent Disney World fanatics.

They're building two sets of the same track layout. One's going in at Hong Kong Disneyland, and one's going in at Disneyland Park in Anaheim.

I LOOOOOOVED lilo and stitch. and think it will be a good thing. i don't do roller coasters so i care less what they do to space mountian.. i love carosel of progress and would hope they would update it instead of close it.

I think it's like Mr. Toad's, Horizons, WoM. They all seemed to get more popular when they were rumored/announced they would be closed.
