Jeff Galloway Training Question

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum and looking forward to running my first half marathon in November for the Wine and Dine half! so excited!
So my Jeff Galloway training sessions start today and I was wondering if the 10 minute warmup and cooldowns should be included in the designated 30 mins of running assigned for the day or not (ie. am I out running/walking for 30 or 50 minutes)?
Has anyone else used this method of training? Feedback on that particular question and the plan in general would be great!
Thanks!
Jenn

I have never done the Galloway method so I cannot give you a definitive answer. However, I think I would go nuts walking 10 minutes before I could start my workout and another 10 minutes when it was over. I'm sure it's a good idea in terms of warming up and cooling down your body, but even when I was a very very beginning runner, I just did a stretching routine before heading out and a few stretches when I was done. I do the same today, 18 years later.

In any case, probably not the answer you were looking for, but welcome to the subforum and good luck with your training for the Wine & Dine! Feel free to join us on the What Did You Do thread.

I followed Galloway's training program for the WDW Marathon last year and I know I only did about 5 minute warmups and cool downs as a beginner and that seemed adequate for me. Good luck with your training!

...and as Jill said stop by the What Did You Do thread for good tips and good people.

Hello and welcome!

I don't do a warm up as separate from my run, because I feel like that first mile is a warm up. I usually just stretch a little and then go. My training program is a modified Higdon intermediate/Galloway/runners world plan...I had to customize to my busy life. I took the amount of running days a week of Galloway, the techniques of Higdon; walk thru water stops, run slower on long runs etc...and the long run mileages of runners world. And my point is you should just figure out what works for you and it's ok to change up a few details as long as your consistently doing your runs and upping your miles. I don't think it matters if you do or don't do the warm ups.

Happy running!

I never do a formal warm-up when I run...I just take the first mile or so a little more slowly and build up my pace from there. But if it works better for you to do a separate warm-up, then by all means, go for it!

See you at Wine & Dine! :)

Usually any prescribed warm up/cool down is in addition to the scheduled run. You can often modify it as you see fit, but when you are just starting out it's important to make sure you are loose before you do anything strenuous. Many experts are now saying that stretching before a run isn't good to do unless you have warmed up.

I followed a "modified" Galloway program for my first 1/2...which incidentally was also the Wine & Dine back in 2011. I didn't follow the 10 minute warm up.....just walk quickly for a couple of minutes, stretched some, then started running. I wouldn't count the warm up or cool down as part of the 30 minute training run. Happy Training!
