How valid do you guys think the article from ABC is about E:E being ready by January? I imagine that they may be doing soft openings, but I do not think it will be officially opened.

The best we can hope for is soft openings by January, which even then might not happen. Nobody should plan a trip around this or any other soft openings (as some have done in the past). The official opening will probably be sometime in the spring, quite possibly on April 22--Earth Day and the AK's opening anniversary.

Yeah, definently stick to some sort of aniversary. I think Disney has a habit of blending one celebration into another. Like EE is part of the 50th (according to the vacation planning DVD), but AK's aniversary will probably get it as well. If the celebrations stopped and started, then that wand and hat would be gone by now!

April 22nd is an obvious opening date, but that by no means prevents soft openings by January. Mission: SPACE was of a similar scale to this ride and had soft openings 4 months before its grand opening.

Uhm, the hat has nothing to do with a celebration.

It is a definite possible maybe that we might see soft openings in January.

But in all seriousness one of the members from this board who has been a very reliable source in the past said that it is possible but not to plan on it. My experience tells me that on a construction project as massive as EE one minor hiccup can easily cause a 30+ day delay so I wouldn’t bet the farm on it but I would love to see it happen.

And lets not forget that hurricane season is right around the corner and predictions are for at least 12 with 4 or 5 making land fall. That could definitely delay construction if not set it way back so I wouldn't make any plans for soft opening trips until some announcement is made around the end of the year.

Well, hopefully if they can get the whole mountain enclosed by July, which is possible, then the hurricanes shouldn't have too much of an effect on construction, since it should have all moved inside. I would hope all of these buildings are built to withstand hurricanes ;) Other than trees being knocked down, it doesn't seem like it took too long to fix the damages that the hurricanes caused to WDW last summer.

Disney's building codes are pretty strict, and this past year nothing of substance really happen to any of the rides/buildingsfrom the hurriacanes. A January soft opening is very likely, but it depends on the next two months work...they need to get it enclosed.

Soft Opening

Forgive my ignorance, but could someone give me a description of what a soft opening means? How does Disney work this concept? My family is planning a trip next Feb 06 and I'd like to know what our chances might be to ride E.E.

A soft opening just means that Disney opens a new attraction "unofficially" before the official opening date. Since the attraction is not yet officially open, Disney can just pick and choose what days and times the attraction may be open. As everything related to soft opening is unofficial, nobody really knows exactly when the soft-opened attraction may be open. The purpose of the soft opening is to get the CMs some experience working with guests on the ride, so that the ride can be tweaked and mistakes fixed before the ride offically opens.
