January 15-16 off school?

I am brand new to the forum and trying to plan a quick trip to Disney in January. My kids have Jan 15 & 16 off school (as well as Monday Jan. 19 for MLK). We would like to visit Disney the week of Jan 12-16, but I am wondering if anyone else has the 15th & 16th off school. I really don't like crowds! Our county and the neighboring county have it off, but maybe it's a local thing (we live in coastal SC)? Please let me know if your school district has those days off too. Thank you for any replies.

I can't answer your question about schools being out, but I can give you some insight about the crowds.

We went over MLK weekend this past January. We arrived on Wednesday before MLK weekend and crowds were average....not as light as I had heard they would be, but not too bad. But....when Friday rolled around, it got crazy and stayed that way all weekend. Very crowded (at least compared to what we are used to). We did not go to a park on MLK day because we went to a Pirate and Princess Party that night, but the next day (Tuesday) which was our last day, The MK was still very crowded (an example....75 minute wait for the Many Adventures of Whinnie the Pooh around 6:00 p.m on that Tuesday evening....I have no idea what the average wait for that ride is, but we've never seen it that long on our previous trips, so to us that was really long). We were surprised because the crowd prediction calendar on touringplans.com had not predicted crowds that heavy for that weekend. They are usually very accurate, so I don't know what was going on.

Crowds were not as bad as summer or Christmas break, but it was crowded enough that we won't be going back near MLK day in the future. But it looks like you plan on being there up until the Friday of MLK weekend, is this right? If so, then you might miss the heavier crowds that we experienced.....it was Friday that we started to notice the increase.

hmm

I know for sure Massachusetts and Rhode Island do not. I have never heard of those dates being taken off. I am sure you will be fine.

I went from Jan 6th - Jan 20th in 2007 and the crowds seemed pretty light throughout. I was defiantly there over MLK weekend but I honestly don't remember it being that bad...

Schools are out January 19th in the Virginia Beach Area, and the 16th and 17th is a weekend. I assume there will be plenty of schools that will be out for this holiday, and as with most holidays at WDW, attendance will more than likely be up during this time.

The 16th and 19th are days off for Orlando public school students. They do have school on the 15th, however.

I wouldn't expect the 16th to have a huge impact, as most parents will have work. It's a teacher in-service day at the school. MLK day, OTOH, may be a busier day.

Thanks for the info everyone! It sounds like having Thursday and Friday off prior to MLK day is a local thing (and it is strange since the kids will have just gone back the week before!) I can't wait to tell the kids we're going to Disneyworld!:sohappy:
