IT Jobs and Disney

Let me begin this thread by saying I certainly don't have all of the information about this topic, and I'm bringing it up from an information-seeking standpoint. I know there are some current/former cast members who frequent these forums, but I welcome anyone's input.

I remember hearing about this several months or so back, and then really nothing much, until a couple of weeks ago, when a big name radio talk show personality brought this up. From what I've heard, Disney has outsourced the majority, if not all, of its IT positions to an outside company or country, because they can pay less to these replacements. I have also heard that the current IT cast members are being forced to train their replacements, and then they will be let go. That's the extent of my knowledge, and to be honest, it's more hearsay than anything, because I've not seen any articles or press releases or anything of the sort about it.

I currently work in IT, and I've always thought it'd be great to work at Disney World one day. Of course, I'd much rather work in IT than anything else, because it's my forte. However, it seems that may not be a possibility anymore. I'm just wondering what others know or have heard. This thread is not meant to be a bashing session or a throwing of misinformation about. I just want to know what's going on, and I hope someone can answer that. Thank you.

This is very old "news" and has other threads dedicated to it.

I see. Well, perhaps you could possibly link to these other threads, please? And yes, I know it's "old" but that doesn't mean it's not relevant or of interest to me.

Well the first place to look would be here: http://disneycareers.com/en/search-jobs/advanced-search/
Today I see 60 full time Technology/IT jobs in Florida being advertised.

So as you see there quite a few IT jobs available under many different disciplines. Disney is a big company with many different divisions each with their own infrastructure, focus, and life cycles. In IT as a general rule, having a wide variety of skills is a plus and you should not expect to be doing or supporting the same thing/product for your entire career. If what you do is a commodity skill expect it to be either automated or outsourced. There is such a thing as pricing yourself out of a job as well as being assigned to a project that is canceled and your position goes out the door with it.

^^^This. I own and actively operate a consulting company. With new hires I do everything I can to make them as well rounded as possible to benefit the company as well as themselves. I also have a former employee, that is employed in Orlando by the mouse. Since he's been there our conversations have never been specific but he likes it for the most part but like anyone there are some things he would prefer were different. He's shared the same sort of observations with me about myself and my company.

There's work out there, if you have prepared yourself with a set of skills that make you valuable to an employer. There will continue to be work out there if you become proficient and well rounded with the ability to accomplish tasks and work with others. It sounds trite, but it's the truth. If you chose an employer that doesn't suit you after you've been there a while, you owe it to yourself and the employer to find a better fit.
