I finally got to ride the Mummy today. There may be several SPOILERS in the review...
Kiara and I got to Universal first, and were going to meet up with Tifani, her mom, and our friend Bryan later. Kiara and I went skipping through the park...over to The Mummy...only to find out...IT WAS OPEN. We were so happy. We went over to get our locker, but then we were stopped by a surveyor...I promised him I would come back a little later, and then we went over to get our locker for the Mummy. We put our bag in there, but *OOPS*, I seemed to of left my camera in my pocket...oh well. We got in the line, which was only 10 minutes, and started our marathon hike to the loading station.
The first section of the queue is like a production area. Film props and pictures from the movie. You wind through the building, and then find yourself back outside at the entrance to the "Museum of Antiquities." You enter through there and find yourself on a soundstage with cameras and costumes and such. You go down a ramp, and into a tomb. This queue is AMAZING. They did an excellent job. I didn't even get to see it all. There was a lot more queue behind a wall, but it wasn't open. You go through the tomb and find a pyramid thing. When 2 people place there hands on it at the same time, the lights flicker, and a familiar tune plays (lets just say they are putting to much NBC in the parks). A hint...When you hear that tune, look up! Coming up next is a blue beetle. Put your hand on it, and watch the screen. You wander into another room, again themed to a tomb with a GIANT pharaoh statue teetering above. You then climb the stairs to the loading platform.
Now about this part. From what I could understand by the muffled tv's, you are on the set of the next Mummy movie. The queue is the movie SET. The artifacts are cursed, and that's why everything goes wrong in the ride.
You get to the loading area, and you are off on your adventure. I wont tell you every twist and turn...but I will say that the IMHOTEHP (Whatever the evil Mummy's name is) Animatronic figure is VERY impressive. It only worked 3 out of the 6 times we went on it. The other times, another effect was being tested on the tomb Imhotehp comes out of. Lights were projected on the eyes and were changing colors. The scene after the one just mentioned is what really scared me. I was on the right side, and I'm telling you, I don't think I have ever jumped so fast.
Kiara and I did it 3 times before Tifani and Bryan met up with us (her mom doesn't do coasters). We both were telling her how awesome it is. She got really excited. We got to the loading area. We sat down in the front row. Then...Tifani had to get off. She could not fit in the restraint. We all felt SO bad, but she tried it again and this time, we were in the second row, and she fit just fine. A word or warning, the front row seats are slightly smaller than the others.
So, Kiara and I did it a total of 6 times. Bryan and I were screaming just as much as Tifani and Kiara was. Even the 6th time, I was still excited to go on it. Now, Mission:Space is my favorite ride anywhere...I have it say, it still is. But, I could stay on the Mummy all day long. I don't know if I can say the same about Mission:Space.
It's a really great ride. Incredibly smooth, and lifts you out of your seat many, many times. The only bad things I have to say about it are:
1)During the roller coaster part, the light up cardboard cutouts of Mummy's reminded me a little of a carnival funhouse.
2)The "False Ending" is so amazingly dumb. I was expecting more.
Now the good:
1)It was incredibly smooth
2)It really kept you guessing as to what was coming next. The LIM Launch backwards (while not very powerful) is really surprising. The airtime at the top of the hill is awesome too.
3)The Mummy Animatronic is so great. I'm guessing it one of the things they just added. It looked extremely realistic and it was really scary when it popped out of the tomb.
Now I'm not sure if this should be billed as "the first phsycological thrill ride". It was great and all, but I dunno...
The Mummy warriors did not "jump" on the car either. Even though it was extremely scary when they popped up. Another thing Universal claims is that the fire burns "inches from your head". It was more like 5 or 6 feet.
And that's it. It is really a great ride. The effects are great, and that's another thing. Every effect and light worked perfectly every time. The track is very smooth, and it's a lot of fun. It wasn't short either. And keep in mind, it is still not finished. Things are being added every day. May 21st is the grand opening, and by the fake wall they had set up out front, the opening celebration should be quite a doozy.
Oh yea...check the album...remember, my camera was in my pocket, and I may have taken a few pictures:animwink:
