from what i remember it is open but nothing itself is open.... when i was there in mid-late july, the international gates that lead from the boardwalk was the entrance I took into epcot and i remember walking around early in the morning while it was still closed but the park itself was open

That would require there being an attraction there that anyone cared about running to get on.

They stopped opening it at 9am because they realized no one cares.

Following up on this, ...

What is the process for park opening if you enter through the international gateway?

We are staying at the Boardwalk and are usually big rope drop fans. How will entering at the back of the park affect us?
Thanks.

If there was, it would cause a mad dash for Food and Wine Festival! It would be similar to the running of the bulls in Spain, but it would be running of the local drunks... I'd be winning the race to Sam Adams area too!

No rope drop for WS. You can enter from IG beginning at FW opening, but not before, if I recall correctly. You can enter from the front beginning at least 1/2 before official opening to catch the main rope drop, which is actually a fairly nice little event.

And my 4 year old got a certificate for being a "Recycling Champion" for dunking a basketball into a trash can that some CM's were pushing around. He thought it was great. I was mostly scared to realize that he could actually read the words "Recycling Champion".

If I remember correctly from my experience, you will occasionally encounter a sign suggesting (but not physically blocking") world showcase walkways until 10AM or so. Maybe around 10:30, they'll stagger opening part of it (maybe up to the Illuminations barge drawbridge on the left side pathway), but the pavilions will still be closed. In Mexico, for instance, there are ropes blocking the stairway up to the pyramid. Shortly after that, they may open the interior lobby of the pavilion (in Mexico's case), but there might still be an interior rope blocking you (in Mexico's case, right before you walk down the ramps into the interior plaza). Then they'll open it up all the way.

By the way -- if you like American Adventure, grab a times guide and find out what the first show of the day is... probably around 11:10 or 11:15. There will be hardly ANYBODY in the show since it's as far as you can get from the main entrance and everybody gets peeled off by other WS attractions.

I have seen the oppisite. They have ropes across the path with a CM there "guarding it"

I have been in the WS "early" 4 or 5 times - either for Princess Breakfasts or on the Segway tours. If I remember correctly there was a CM that had unlip the rope and let us in each time.

Hung over from last night's candy overindulgence?

I thought I had seen ropes as well but maybe it was just a sign and I got intimidated (dammit I hate them signs)

There is a rope up at the IG bridge and after Norway. So, the countries between China and France are off limits (there is a rope and a CM there) the other countries have ropes preventing access.
