"Is it time for a new story line for Disneyland's 'Fantasmic!' show?" - OC Register Article

There were one to many typos and grammatical errors in that piece.

I also don't see the author's point, or what exactly they're proposing. And using Mama Mia! as an example to get whatever point they have across doesn't do it for me. I can't stand that musical and ABBA's music is nothing special.

I found this article while scrolling on Facebook and I thought it might provoke interesting discussion.

I found question raised by the author to be rather interesting. I agree that the Fantasmic storyline is a little long in the tooth and that the show could use a fresh perspective. I would love it if they could revamp the production at least as frequently as the parades, World of Color and the fireworks shows.

Yeah, I didn't particularly understand what the author thought could be changed. I do believe Fantasmic! as it stands is timeless (moreso than the glorified clipshow known as World of Color in my opinion) and shouldn't be changed too much so I disagree with the author there.

World of Color is more boring than algebra.
The problem I have with it is, there's no story. With Disney, story is everything. Story is what turns a random roller coaster into something like Space Mountain. I call WOC a glorified clipshow because really, that's what it is. At least Fantasmic! has a story to tie everything together. Eh, maybe I'm biased.

But those fountains though. They're magnificent.

Yeah, I understand that some people are going to go ape sh*t at the mere mention of changing anything significant to Fantasmic's storyline, but it really could use some updating. At minimum update some of the characters and add some more recent Disney music..

I personally would not have any issues with them making some minor changes here and there as long as they could fit within the actual storyline. Otherwise, you're looking at a whole revamp which...well, that's no longer Fantasmic! is it.

I absolutely love Fantasmic and think it's a far superior show to either of the WoC shows. That said, it's 24 years old now -- how many shows play in the same venue for 24 years? Maybe it is time for something new, or at least some kind of setup that allows them to rotate different shows at the RoA seasonally with the opportunity to bring Fantasmic back on occasion.

Counterpoint to that is, of course, be careful what you ask for. It could just as easily turn out to be Fantasmic 2000. :)

Note: I have not seen Fantasia 2000 in many years and it's probably unfair for me to make a joke about it as the reviews were not too bad!

Thanks for that link! Although as I was clicking it I thought "Watch this be another useless article from that useless Robert Niles guy". Sure enough, it was.

The Register keeps publishing stuff from him where he just speculates and postulates and guesses. He has no inside info and no connections worth anything, he's just a blogger who keeps rambling on about stuff he thinks Disneyland management should do.

Yeah.. I feel like articles (from any site) not presenting actual facts should be labeled as opinion so if someone's looking for news they're able to tell, I guess.

Fantasmic works incredibly well as a musical piece as well as a show, so it would be tricky to mess with its structure too much (I've never seen the WDW version). If they keep the opening, Pink Elephants, Peter Pan, the Dragon and the Mark Twain finale, that would keep the show recognizable while leaving room for change in the flowers, Pinocchio, the Princess floats and the villain montage (just keep Maleficent as the last villain). New tech is always welcome, too, but I think the high points and structure work fine. As long as they don't have the audience chanting "Dreams come true! Dreams come true!" :D

New Story Line? No. The actual story line is great, and works perfectly. Some new scenes swapped in, or added? Perhaps. However, if the update became anything like Tokyo Disney Sea's version i'd rather throw myself into the river while it is on fire.

I don't want that modern musical sound, the added Imagination sung a thousand times... The nice thing about Fantasmic is the technology feels modern, but the story feels classic... It's a fine balance when you add scenes or moments to it, that they do not mess with that "classic" feel.. TDS version is dreadful compared to the original, or even DHS... from the standpoint of it being Fantasmic. It's not, and it should be called something else.
