Are you taking the photo at night? I get a lot of camera shake at night. Even if it's during the day, try using a small tripod or even just resting your camera on a railing or garbage can. Less camera shake = less blur.

That's the solution!

Maelstrom beat me to it by 3 minutes!

Also important to remember that camera shake and blurry picture are enhanced by most digitals as opposed to classic film. They process light very differently, and take loger to record an exposure than film. If your pictures are really struggling, consider a small, inexpensive film camera for night shots. I always find that a great 35mm (I use a Canon) is great to use if you know that you aren't doing anything wet and wild at night. Good luck!

anti shake is VERY uncommon on still cameras .. so most wont have that option

here is what to do for clear picutres:
low iso setting + long exposures + tripod needed = nice and clear
high iso setting + shorter exposure + steady hand = could get a bit grainy

if you're trying to take night pictures of the castle .. and it's not a portrait .. deactivate the flash !

Things that can add to blur - zooming in. The closer you zoom, the more hand shake is magnified. Also the depth of field will be reduced - that is how far in front and behind the thing you focused on will also be in focus

Be careful where you focus, if you accidentally focus on a person walking nearby that could throw things out.

How many manual controls does your camera have? If you accidentally switch on something manual, that too can cause problems.

I know a number of people that have had the same problem.

Even with the 2 of use taking pictures side by side theirs blur yet mine don't. I have converted nearly all of them into buying a camera with image stabilization.

Another thing that I have found is that people on vacation while walking with a group of people sometimes tend to 'snap' while walking.

Most of the time in the parks I tend not to use the zoom very much for just that reason unless it is a picture I can't walked closer to get the same picture. (i.e. Walk down Main Street to get closer to the castle instead of zooming from the train station.) Also zooming in and out can run your batteries down in a flash if you do it to much.

You can have a bit of fun with zoom over moving closer to an object, so it's not something to be totally avoided. My limitation is to make sure I can still hand hold it without causing blur. A good guide line is to make the hundredths of a second exposure not drop below the focal length. For example, if you have a 200mm lens, then don't let the exposure drop below 200th of a second.

Zooming will let you get different foreground elements and give a different look to the subject. And the joy of digital is that you get to play and immediately see the results, discarding those that don't work :)
