The problem with removing Saddam is quite complex. He clearly does not act in isolation and has a dedicated team of followers, a 'government' if that is the right word. If you remove the head, you not only make him a martyr but leave the position open to be filled by a man you don't know nearly as much about. While Saddam is a very dangerous man, at least a lot is known about him, his beliefs, his politics and most importantly his tactics. When the next person takes over, don't imagine they are going to be any nicer, they will simply be new and we will be in the position of facing years of intelligence gathering to build up an equivalent base of knowledge that we currently have about Saddam.
Don't misunderstand me, I am in no way suggesting that we leave him alone to get on with it. I am simply saying that to cure a problem will require more than simply the removal of one man.
