Seems that congress is looking into the *wild west cruise industry*. Senator Schumer is looking for a investigation of flags of convince on cruise ships calling at US ports and carrying mostly US passengers.

The goal is a passengers bill of rights. You can find the article in the Marine Engineering Log at:

http://issuu.com/marinelog/docs/apr_2013_marine_log_magazine/1

turn to page 18.

Six rights so far:

1. The right to disembark a docked ship if basic provisions cannot adequately be provided onboard.

2. The right to a full refund if cruise is cancelled for mechanical breakdowns.

3. The right to full time on board professional medical attention in the event of a major health crisis.

4. The right to real time adjustments in the travel plan of the ship in the event of mechanical failure or emergency.

5. The right of the crew to be properly trained in emergency and evacuation. procedures.

6. The right to back up power in the case of generator failure.

The full investigation may add rights to this list.

While it is the Carnival Inc. various lines vessel failures that brought this to a head, it is directed to ALL CRUISE LINES and rightfully so!

Now I am sure Senator Schumer is using this issue for his own political gain............but it is a start and hopefully the investigation of *flagged cruise ships* will make the cruising public and crew safer on the high seas!

Without these vessels sailing under the United States flag, there's little hope for any unilateral or extraterritorial measures being enforced. The FAA has tried it with air-carriers and it hasn't worked.

They might all be flying another country's flag... But most of their passengers are in the USA! No compliance, no docking! ;)

It's about time the cruise industry is held accountable - it really is like the "wild west." I'd like to see this extended to American airlines as well, who seem to think they can do whatever the hell they want with the flying public.

Unfortunately, people have to go places - and saying "well then don't fly" isn't really much of an option. Not so with cruising.
