Insects in July

I'm heading down to Disney in July and was wondering if the Orlando area experiences any mosquito or horse flies problems like we do up here in the north. Around here, going out at night near any sort of water is a mistake without any bug protection.

In the parks bugs are never a problem.

But on your hotel property the mosquitos are usually out. When I went back in '98 they wouldn't allow anyone to swim after 9 and recomended people try not to be outside, around the hotels at night.

The last time I went in august though there were no problems. I mean expect mosquitos but nothing worse than here in Rhode Island...I don't know how bad they are near you. Of course if youre near wooded or swampy areas you'll most likely have more problems.

mosquitoes are hardly any problem , it's those "love bugs " that make a mess.

love bugs are small black bugs ,they like to fly in the air when they mate,if your driving in orlando ,your windsheild will be covered in "SPLAT".

Thanks for your responses. I play softball next to one of the rivers here in New York and it gets pretty bad at times. I am just hoping to avoid this in Orlando

There are mosquitoes if it rains a lot. Summer is the time for them... bring your bug spray anyways...
They never went after me, but my friends were eaten live by them! :animwink:

Mosquitos a problem?

I don't know about the rest of you, but last year they were really a problem. It was terrible. I have story after story of mosquitos at Disney last year. Granted, they weren't a problem at the parks but once we got back to our hotel it was a mess.

My mom and sister were waiting in the car for the rest of my family to come and by the time I got there I could see atleast 10 mosquitos swarming in the car. They had only been waiting about 30 secs and mosquitos were everywhere. Once my sister noticed them see screamed bloody murder...It was quite a site to see.

By the way if you were wondering were staying at Old Key West.

While we were staying there, a bunny became like a hotel pet because we always saw him around our room. People even put carrots out for the bunny. Anyways you would always see him nibbling on the carrots but the mosquitos were soo bad that while he was eating they would bite him. I saw about 5 on his nose and soo many other on his body. He would flinch but they wouldn't go away. It was soo pitiful.

Overall the only times we had with mosquitos was at night when we'd go into our room and they'd get in (then we'd kill about 10 of em; not kidding either) or during the day when we'd hit a tennis ball into the woods and then about 15 would attack me.

Oh I almost forgot!

If you were if we told Disney about the mosquitos while we were there, we did. In fact we called guest services twice.

The first time we called they brought up a guy and he sprayed just a little mosquito killer can around and that was it. Obviously that would not keep the thousands of them out there away.

The second time we called I forget what they did but it still didn't help.

It kind of frightened us with all the mosquitos around because of the deal with the West Nile Virus in full warning.

If you were wondering I went in August 2001.

Disney sprays all their vegetation on certain different days (the parks, downtown disney, and the water parks get it every day though). The resorts are one a one to three day schedule depending on the time of year. If you ever walk out of your room early in the morning and smeel that disgusting smell it is the insecticide.
