Infrared Flash?

Pretty simple question ....Do they exist and will a digital camera pick up infrared light in a similar manner to a standard flash. I am using a Panasonic DMC-FZ30

The reason I am asking is while doing researching a new digital camera purchase I read about the infrared AF assist lamps and it got me thinking. If the camera picks up infrared light then an infrared flash could be used on the dark rides without disturbing the other guests on the ride. I have done a few internet searches and have not found much in the way of results on the subject so I decided to turn to vast photographic knowledge of WDWmagic.

So am I nuts or would this actually work?

the castmembers operating the IR cameras wouldn't be so pleased

I've only seen triggers using infrared leds to activate flash systems.. but never an actual IR flash

I know german police is experimenting with IR flashes for mounted speeding cameras (so the flash wont irritate the driver and causing accidents)

but I think they are pretty expensive cause the light source must strictly emmit IR ranged light .... normal bulb flash lights have a low IR spectrum power .. so you cant work with IR filters (only letting the IR through)

maybe a array of high powered IR LED's could simulate a low to midrange "flash" ... (but the responsetime is too slow)
