This is probably a dopey question...Can I use an infared pass filter on a sony handycam? Would I have to modify anything in the camera to be able to use the filter?

depends on the camcorder. Some have pretty good IR filters internally to limit IR on the sensor for normal use and that can make them difficult to use for IR unless you have the filter removed internally first. Also be careful if you are going to be video taping in public places, there was a rash of people using the early night vision option on camcorders to get semi-nude images of unsuspecting women (some material like spandex is almost invisible when view with IR) had unwanted photos of themselves taken (albeit in shades of green) and in some places you can get arrested as they will assume you are a peeping tom. When you use an IR filter your going to stick out like a sore thumb because it will look like you are videoing with a lens cap on.
