Incredibles, Pixar & Disney

I can not wait to see the Incredibles. It looks…incredible. I think that this will be the best Pixar film yet. This should rake in millions and I think will take over as the number 1 grossing animated movie. Brad Bird and Pixar sure do know what they are doing. That is why I think Disney is making a big mistake in not re-up with Pixar. I understand that Pixar is looking for a more lucrative deal, but for Disney to think that giving up on this successful relationship is a better idea then to give some control back to Pixar is unbelievable. Now, I’m not going to sit here and say I understand everything that Pixar is asking, but I think if Disney let’s this slip by, it will be a huge mistake. Does anyone know what the issue is with these two companies (other than the reported feud between Eisner and Jobs)?

Well, Iger made sure this deal is done for. He publicly announced that the WDC doesn't need Pixar.

I just hope that Disney doesn't regret that in the future...not saying that they can't come up with beautiful animation and storylines...but I think the partnership was great.

I thought that Finding Nemo would be the last film by Disney/Pixar. It was already in production, right? As much as I love Disney and Pixar, I think Disney still has a chance at doing a good job. (Let's not forget Dinosaur) However, I wish they would stay together. Stay together for the kids!!!

Yes. The issue is simple. Pixar wanted to rewrite its deal with Disney so that they (Pixar) would regain full control of Woody, Buzz and ALL the other Pixar created characters for which Disney had already paid good (up front) money. Eisner would not agree to such a deal and neither would Walt! Remember that Walt lost his creation "Oswald The Lucky Rabbit" early on in his (Walt's) career. Walt swore that would never happen again! Disney bought the characters and they should keep them. Just as Steve Jobs has successfully driven Apple into the ground, so he will do with Pixar.

I believe one source of contention was keeping the character rights for future movies, and Disney wouldn't budge; it wants them. I understand why - they've made boatloads of money so far, why change the model? But I also understand Pixar's motivations for wanting to change their relationship going forward. Pixar does not need Disney; I believe they are bright enough and talented enough to go it "on their own". I also believe they have learned a great deal from Disney during their relationship. Does Disney need Pixar, considering that two of Disney's last three "hits" have been Pixar movies.... time will tell.

Yes, but they need a company to distribute their films. After Steve Jobs cut off negotiations with Disney, Pixar went shopping for a new movie distribution deal. No other film distribution company would agree to the terms dictated by Jobs. As of now, Pixar still doesn't have a movie distribution deal and they aren't going to get one if Jobs doesn't get off his high horse!
