Inaugural Disneyland Half Marathon

I am!!! It will be my first visit to DLR and so far I've found some great info. about it in the forum.

I ran WDW's half this past Winter and it was so much fun running through the parks and seeing the characters. We could even pose for pictures on parade floats! It really helped keep me motivated to finish.

Also it's a great race because runners of all abilities participate. (That's the case for WDW at least. I expect DLR to be the same.) I ran my second half marathon this past March in Boston (the "Run to Remember" for fallen law enforcement) and it was just no fun because it was all more experienced runners. I keep about a 13 to 14 minute/mile pace so I don't think I'm that slow but I was among the last to finish.

I have a feeling that DLR's half will be even better than WDW's just because it seems like there will be more to see. Jogging back to Epcot from MK killed me! There is nothing at all to distract you from the run on World Drive.

Good luck training! It's just over two months away!

-p.s.
anyone know why there isn't a full marathon at DLR?

Hi! My husband and I are heading out to run from Rhode Island! We are so excited! This will be our first trip to Disneyland - We're regulars at WDW with our last trip this past June. I actually just booked our dinner reservations tonight for the trip. We're gonna try Goofy's Kitchen the night before the race and then Blue Bayou the night of the race. Good luck to everyone!

My completely uninformed guess is that unlike WDW, which has lots of space, the Anaheim resort is mostly locked inside a residential community that doesn't really lend itself to a Disney-branded race of that length. Even with the trek out to Honda Center and Angels' Staduim, we spend I think 3 miles zig-zagging up a section of the city.

What's the Honda Center? I've never heard of that. You don't mean that Honda dealership next to the Orange Freeway just north of The Pond, do you?

That's great! Is this your first race? My friend and I are going from the couch to the half marathon in 12 weeks. We're up to 6 miles now and improving quickly. I can't wait!!

Goofy's Kitchen should make for some good carb loading the night before. The Blue Bayou is one of my most favorite spaces in the park - I'm sure you'll love it too!

I am now running and can not wait. I have never been to Disneyland. I also go to WDW (about 30 times) and can't wait to see how different it is. I can't think of a better why to see it for the first time than running the very 1st DL 1/2 Marathon. I am using this as a training run for Goofy's race in Jan 2007 back in WDW!!!

Wow! Are you doing the whole "Race and a Half" in Florida? One of my friends is doing that. It's funny, I just started training for this in June, and while I'm not there yet a marathon now seems totally achievable. Back in June, I couldn't run to the end of the block. Who am I kidding...I couldn't even run from danger. And I didn't want to drive 13.1 miles, let alone run it. Now that I'm in it I'm totally pumped. So, this is becoming quite a life-changing experience for me.

Congrats on getting into the race!

Let's Meet!!

Hey all you WDWMagic DLR Half-Marathon-ers - My other runner friends and I will be at the Cove Bar, which is in DCA above Ariel's Grotto, on Friday 9/15 between 3:30 - 4:30. They have a top-notch staff, great beverages (both g-rated and adult), and tasty snacks. We'll then head over to the first party stop for the Cars pre-parade and Block Party Bash. Whether you're a runner, a supporter of a runner, or simply a WDWMagic friend, we hope to see you there!!

-Aaron

What did you think?

Okay Half Marathoners - what did you think of the big day??

My comments are several. We'll start with the pre-race. Many of my friends and I were new runners, so we were in corrals C and D (out of A-E). I also had a couple friends in B. None of us could really hear the pre-show and the race start. I also thought there was an absence of eneregy at the race start. I really expected Disney to get me pumped up to run a really great race. I couldn't tell what the music was...it was a droning beat that made me sleepy (race started at 6 am - YUCK!). Based on what I heard about the WDW races, I expected high NRG music, lots of characters (particularly the green army men!), pyro, and a better overall buzz than what we had. We did have a form of pyro, but it was lame.

There were a lot of choke points at the front of the race. I would have been okay - seeing as I was already in the back - with them holding corrals a little to help the natural spread of people. The short stretch down Katella helped with crowding a little. But a few things that dissappointed me were 1.) walking across the start line because it was wall to wall people and 2.) walking through the castle because it was wall to wall people.

That said, it was an absolutely wonderful race! It was so much fun running through the parks, as well as all of the people cheering us on. At one point (thanks National AIDS Marathon peeps!) I almost cried, I was so happy/proud. I really liked that there were various bands, performers, cheerleaders, etc along the route. The last group of cheerleaders (before the tunnel) totally motivated me. Their energy somehow pumped me up when I was feeling like I didn't have much more to give.

The very end - running through DCA then to Downtown Disney - was amazing! There were so many people out there cheering for us. Even though I was running with bruised ribs and an injured knee, their support pushed me all the way to the end. I finished about 30 minutes faster than I thought I would. It was great!!

MEDALS: The medals are *HUGE*!!!!! I love, Love, LOVE mine!!! I was afraid I was going to fall over when it was placed over my neck! I can't wait to frame it!!!!!

My husband and I also ran the race - It was our first trip to DL and we had an AMAZING time!! We're already waiting for registration to start for next year - It's a no-brainer that we'll be running again! Overall, I liked the course - I really liked the first 4 miles or so because there was a lot to look at - park scenery, characters, etc. It was fun. There was a big stretch where it was a little boring and I struggled to keep focused (the stretch before reaching the Angels stadium). Overall though - it was very well run.

Time wise - I was very happy with how I did - My chip time was 2:14 58 sec. I wanted to run 2:15 so I was pleased. My husband actually came in 17th place overall. He wasn't too happy with his time (5 minutes slower than he's done before in a 1/2), but he said the course was a little slow. For someone really competing he said it was hard to pick up speed, especially in the parks, because of the tight turns and tight areas. He also said the change in surfaces was hard (ie. dirt on baseball field). Anyway, glad everyone had fun!

Conrats on DL!

The Goofy is fun but 2 back to back early mornings suck! I will be back again getting 3 medals in 07. I have a bunch of photo's, video's, and reports about the Goofy on my website http://www.DisneyRunning.com . Also, if anyone has a report/photo's they would like to add about any Disney race (5K- marathon) please send them along.

Thanks,

Robert

So it sounds like this was pretty well organized by Disneyland. This is the first time they had done a race like this, and I was wondering how they were going to pull it off. For a first-time-ever Inaugural event, it sounds like Disneyland did a pretty good job on their first try, right?

Next year they are going to have this event on Labor Day weekend, so at least Haunted Mansion will still be open before it closes for its annual rehab and makeover into the Holiday version.
