In room internet

I see that all the resorts now have in room internet. My question is, we stayed at POR last summer and saw the ethernet connection behind the beds and understand that there is to be a cable in the room for this use. Does anyone who has stayed there lately seen how long the cord is. A few years ago when I used dial up I had a 25 ft phone cord just for while I was staying at the world so I could sit at the table. I was thinking of getting a 25 ft cat5 cord but didnt know if mabee they already had long ones in the room. Im sure they are like 3 or 4 ft long but thought id ask. I wonder why they didnt just put the connection under the table where it would be used anyway.

Im staying at Old Key West right now, and it is about a 4-5 foot chord. Since it is plugged into my computer, i cant tell u exactly. But no longer than 5.

Putting by the table would make too much sense, besides why they didn't wire during the rehab a few years ago is beyond me, just poor planning. My guess would be it was the easiest way without ripping into the walls. The cord does reach the table, but it just reaches, so the wire runs across the room about 2 feet off the floor and you need to be careful if walking to the door as you will have to step over it (I guess some rooms have the cable there already, the one we were in did). Pop is great as the outlet is right next to the table because when they built Pop they allowed for the possibility. Pop even has an extra phone outlet by the table which I used to use for regular dial up before high speed came to Pop.

They're short - at All Star Music we came up with moving the table to inbetween the beds and it barely made it. I'm sure housekeeping loved us.

Sounds like its off to get a long cat 5 cable. Also how does the billing work? I will brobally only get on it every other day of out 12 day stay. Will I have to pay for all 12 days or do they just charge you at the end for the days that you used it.

$10 for 24 hours. It goes on your room's charge account thingy - so you do have to have a credit card on file or go down to front desk and prepay.

If you get a cable, make sure it's female-male, as the connector in the room is a male end.

The way the billing works is by 24 hour time blocks. So if sign on at 10:00p Monday night, you can use it until 10:00p Tuesday night. It is also $9.95 per 24 hr. period.

Not to sound stupid but....HUH??? Ive never ran into a male wall connection. Are you talking about if you just added it to the cable provided by disney or is it really a male plug wall jack.

Disney's cord is part of a little stand thingy that sits on the desktop or table, depending on the resort. Hence, it's male.

If you want to use your own cable, you connect to the cable - good luck in moving furniture to find the actual wall jack. In some resorts it's obvious, in others it's hidden behind large pieces of furniture.

when we were at POR a few weeks ago the cord was sitting on the table in the room. I did not know what is was at first. After a closer look I realized it was for the computer. So I think very easy to use.

Yea im pretty sure you could unplug it from the wall and plug in your own.

Yes, you can, but there cord does reach the table, it's just that it is draped across the walkway a bit in the room.

Once you've plugged the ethernet cord into the jack and your computer, you will open your web browser and it will go to a page that explains everything. You will be billed $9.95 per 24 hour period to your room. It's really easy.

HUH??? MALE??? I use them all the time at POFQ and they are the standard female plug-in ethernet cables. They actually do not provide you with a cable at all. If you want one, you either bring your own, or have to ask for it from the front desk. The one the resort provides you is 5' long. Unusable. Bring your own. I have one that recoils into a small container that reaches 25 feet as need. That way I can plug it in and sit with my laptop on my lap on the bed.

Rest assured it is the standard hotel-style ethernet set-up - and you need a standard travel ethernet cable. I have never in my life heard of a "male -female" ethernet cable - they don't exist.

If you have traveled to any other hotel in the world with an ethernet setup, it is the EXACT same thing.

My question is when are they going to have wireless internet, so we can avoid this problem altogether? It's pretty common in most full-service hotels now, and shouldn't be difficult for Disney to implement.

At POR they are already in the room and I know this because I've stayed there before and used them. It is a little thing sitting on the night stand with the cable in it that reaches over to the table. I do not know what they have done or stayed at POFQ, so I can't comment, but POR I have stayed there and that was the resort the OP was asking about.

Would taking a wireless router work? Could I just plug it into the ethernet connection behind the nightstand? Could that also cause a issue with someone else using the internet wirelessly through my connection and me paying for it? That would solve the wire problem.

I know that works at hotels outside Disney, so I don't see why it wouldn't work there. But I'm speaking as an Apple user with an AirPort base station. I've had no good luck with Linksys and such.
