I don't think thats what he is saying (nor do I believe, but I may be wrong, that he mentioned them). They were great stories and would be hits no matter how they were drawn.
A good story is a good story is a good story no matter how it is presented. You can use the latest gimmicks and pay millions of dollars to produce something, but that won't keep the people coming back if the basic premise is bad.
